Angry about proposed travel ban exemption for footballers

I thought that for the AFL in Queensland the bubble is wherever you happen to be at the time!

I'm forecasting all the noise will be about the bubble.

There won't so much of a focus on the fact they were drunk and disorderly, evicted for bad behaviour from the club (that no doubt is used to some pretty rough types) and were brawling in the street. Apparently that's all perfectly acceptable behaviour for "stars"

So just checking. Were the 400 AFL people who flew into Qld this week tested for Covid before they left? Other than a report on AFF I cannot find anywhere on the net where that has been stated.

I don't have a source but it was reported on the radio here in Melbourne that all AFL hub attendees past and present were tested and isolated prior to leaving Melbourne

Thanks. Not reported here in SA that this had happened. Wise move if it was done.

Both players sent home immediately and cop 10 game bans which will more than likely end their careers. Richmond fined $100k which comes out of the soft cap so the club will have to lay off staff

That $100k consists of a $75k fine and the suspended $25k from Richmond's first indiscretion.

Yes,, they play by the rules.

Have you been paying attention

So, this sort of thing by some AFL guys is called playing by the rules, by some.

Once again, those who want to prove that the rules do not apply to them.

I saw the video tonight of the two Richmond players. One vomiting whilst leaning against the counter of what looked like a fast food outlet or deli. Gold coast doesnt need schoolies or tourists while it has the wonders of rogue AFL players.
Looks like a kebab joint (near Hilton Surfers). Orchid Avenue: Strip joints/Clubs/Kebab shops area.

Reported by the ABC News: ".... There is simply no excuse for this breach. The two players knew the rules and chose to ignore them, putting the safety of everyone at risk ...”

As I forecast a few posts up...

"We can't forget these are young men, young people make mistakes, and these are very, very serious mistakes," he said.

"They'll learn from it, but we need to put our arm around them and we need to help them regain the trust and respect of our football club and the community."

Peddling the "age old" AFL party line again, boys will be boys, they are young, lets move on everyone, no reference to bad behaviour.

Just "mistakes", no reference to deliberate irresponsible illegal behaviour that should be condemned.

Provided the AFL is meeting all costs, why is this approach so appalling?
Because it simply demonstrates that the rules can be circumvented by those with money and/or clout. While the rest of us, the ones with spouses undergoing radiation therapy, parents in palliative care, families in other states and tonnes of other reasons not deemed to be exemption worthy, without the means to do otherwise, have to play by the rules, which are meant to be for the safety of everyone, just have to suffer.

I think they should have to pay those fines personally. And Cochin stump up the $25K from the first thing. He's the captain, he should have been on this.

While the fines are being paid by the clubs, then the players will not learn. And not to mention that if it comes out of the soft cap, they've ruined SOMEONE ELSE'S life with their behaviour, because now they will lose their job.

The club appears to have asked them to pay. However they can't make them as the maximum fine allowable to players is $5000 under the current agreement. And given that the players have taken a pay cut it's been reported that $37,500 could be around 70% of their wage this year. Not saying they shouldn't pay, just providing context.

But the amount that the club has to pay means that likely an assistant coach just lost his job. For doing absolutely nothing wrong and who would have kept his or her job if these two had just followed the rules.

Any self respecting virus wouldn't touch football players. Grown men, who chase a leather bladder around a paddock.....

And someone likely loses their job whether the two players pay or not as it still hits the soft cap. Given Richmond is one of the giant clubs with masses of back office staff it could be anyone, not just a coach.

It’s included in their soft cap regardless of who pays the fine.

True about the soft cap. And yes, anyone in the club can lose their job. Or maybe a couple depending on salary.

I read elsewhere they are left with 70% of their COVID-cut salary.

For one player, the pre-COVID salary was $158k, post COVID was $110k. So the fine would leave them with about $72k.

Apparently the club getting the players to pay the fine is not allowed as part of the code of conduct agreement reached between league officials and the AFLPA.

The code reportedly prevents clubs from taking further action against players after the league has already handed down punishments.

With the soft cap, in this case, it could just as easily be distributed between the big earners taking a small cut and no one would be forced to leave.

Then pay them as "boys", not as men. What's a fair price $15/hr?
