ANA today unveiled the configs for their 787 fleet:
Domestic 264 seats: F12 Y252
Short-Haul International 222 seats: C42 Y180
Long-Haul International 158 seats: C46 Y112

ANA announced it would fit 12 Sicma Majesty business class recliner seats. In economy it will fit 242 Sicma AIRgonomic FX seats in a 2-4-2 layout. Further, the aircraft is fitted with a JAMCO-supplied economy class bar underneath the signature 787 LED-lit archway, female-only lavatories, Panasonic in-flight entertainment and Toto washlets in each lavatory, a first for a commercial aircraft.

For international long-haul operations, ANA will offer 46 Sicma Skylounge seats supplied as part of its Business Staggered product with 1-2-1 and 1-1-1 layout, and 112 economy class AIRgonomic FX seats.
The aircraft will first be deployed on charter operations between Tokyo Narita airport and Hong Kong. In the fourth quarter it will begin operating on regular scheduled domestic Japanese routes connecting Tokyo's Haneda Airport with Hiroshima and Okayama.

I wonder how much water thay have to carry to run this? Assuming all water is once only use (hopefully!)?

Maybe that's why there's so few seats!

@ simongr - this wont matter if there's sufficient other toilets. The issue is if there's the same number of toilets and one or more is "restricted".

Actually it does still matter. If the revenue model requires 112 whY seats to be profitable factoring in these stupid women only toilets then they could remove the stupid things and provide more space for EVERYONE - including people who have paid the same price theoretically for the same service!

I do hate discrimination in all its forms - both the overt public discrimination that everyone rails against and this form of "acceptable" discrimination (much like women only gyms and other areas).

Yeah I'm the same...

158 seats isn't many for an aircraft of this size... The 738 can technically hold more people (although I doubt with the same level of comfort)

10 people must get to stand

Rather than just acceptable discrimination, can we not also see that there are some potential hygiene issues as well. Frankly I hate going into the toilet at the end of a long flight to see the floor covered in liquid. If not water the liquid can only be caused by men. I'm sure women might not like to drag their clothes in that stuff. But to balance that maybe they need sit down only toilets and urinals.

I also wonder if the wash and dry functions of the toilets are limited by anatomy.

They work very well for men too!

Maybe they need to bring in space shuttle style toilet tubes

Can't be done :!:

I am sure they could have designed the interiors without female only loos... I believe some other airlines operate in this fashion...

How is this an issue only for women? Men have to wade through Bear Grylls tipple as well...

It's an issue and it's disgusting. But men don't have to drop their pants everytime they use a toilet.

Yeah but if they removed a toilet or two they wouldn't provide more space, they'd put a seat there. :)

Could it be that there are some range/payload restrictions on the early production models?

I'd say that they simply want to give loads of space to their premium pax, afterwards there was only space for 112Y seats. (Only 14 rows if using 2-4-2, that's nothing)

<don't quote me on the following>
I'm pretty sure there are restictions which will be in place until the type has a history of good service (from memory higher ETOPS levels are only awarded after a period of trouble free service, and even then it's awarded to the carrier), but that's more going to affect the routes which the aircraft flys rather than the number of pax it can carry.

"One women-only lavatory will be designated for use by women in all classes. Men will be restricted from using such toilets except in emergencies and when there are very few female passengers, ANA said."

If that is still the policy, then i don't see the issue - as long as the overall number of toilets isn't actually reduced

I say after 3 years they will just change the layout anyway.
I always think Airlines start off with grand plans for these type of things.
