AMS-SYD-BNE | Intl. > Dom. at SYD | What happens to checked baggage?

I want to visit the family-in-law later this year for the first time in 3 years (something with a virus...) and I'm looking at a ticket AMS-HKG-SYD-BNE.

AMS-SYD (CX270 + CX139) will arrive at the International terminal and SYD-BNE is QF500 from the domestic terminal. Time in between flights in SYD is over 9 hours so I want to book a hotel near the airport. I will have to pass customs & border control with my carry-on bags, but my main question is what will happen to the checked baggage in SYD?

I can book the entire trip as one ticket, so in general the checked baggage will be taken 'automatically' to the final destination (BNE). But now, the last leg of my flight is a domestic flight, so when I arrive in BNE there will be no border control officer to check the checked baggage. And actually, this doesn't sound as a likely scenario.

So I expect I have to pick up my checked baggage at SYD, pass customs & border control and check-in those bags again at the domestic terminal. When I check in my bags at AMS the baggage receipt will tell me where I have to pick up my bags, but I rather know that a bit earlier. ;)

Does anyone knows if my gut feeling is right?

You will arrive at SYD T1, the international terminal, which is a fair distance from the domestic terminals, T3 for Qantas flights or T2 for Virgin/Jetstar. But given the time between your flights I figure you'll be collecting your luggage at T1 and taking it with you to your hotel, then re-checking it at T3/2 before your domestic flight.

Thanks for your replies. We just booked a multi-city trip AMS-SYD / BNE-AMS and we'll book a seperate flight SYD-BNE later. The take-off of QF500 was a bit too early for us, given the fact we have to check-in our baggage again. Mum-in-law is over the moon. ;)

Look at Dayroom at the Rydges.
That is just across the walkway from T1.
There is no Dayroom capable hotel at T2/T3 in SYD.
There is the Ibis Budget. but that is a fair walk from either T2/T3.
T1 to T2/T3 is not walkable, you will need to either get the train, or a taxi or an Uber.
((Ah)), I see you have decided to do a separate booking, int/dom at SYD and back.
This gives a bit of options.
With bags, I would go with either VA or QF, but if you are interested in earning CX points in OW, maybe go with QF.
I would avoid JQ, no matter how cheap they are.
Edit: let us know what you decide to do, in the end, in regards to to SYD, if you want to stay there one night, or get up to BNE asap.
Yes, you will have to collect your bags in SYD, prior to getting into the open zone, and pass immi and customs there.
Don't forget to get your and every pax DPD done online, this is a new procedure, and also (for now), still fill in the IPC on the plane.
The DPD app is a pain in the bum to fill in, better to use the website version, you will need to get your passport's smartchip read, and take a selfie, and then also fill in a lot of questions.
www.homeaffairs(dot)gov.au is the place to fill it in.

Just saw that you arr on CX139, it will have to be an overnight stay in SYD, as no way would you make the last QF flight of the day, immi might take half an hour or more, ETA 19.30, you might get across to T2/T3 at 20.30/21.00.
Overnight at the Rydges is the best idea, then taxi/uber to T3 next day.
QF bus would only work with QF flights, there has been tales of pax on QF's partner EK, and they were not allowed to use the QF T1 -> T3 bus, few days ago it was on the QF side of AFF.
Using a credit card, for the train, it would be $6.65 peak (includes station access fee of $4.00) per pax, peak time from T1 int airport station to T2/T3 dom airport station.
$6.09 if its offpeak, includes station access fee of $2.43, so cheaper to get the QF5xx after that first one, ie, QF500.
Cheaper a bit if you can get the QF506 or later flight time.
Taxi can be $25 or more, yes, even for that short distance, uber would be worth a look at, if you can download the uber app.

A couple of years ago I stayed overnight at the Ibis budget before flying to BNE. I took a shuttle from T1 to the hotel and in the morning it was a 10 minute walk to dom, so that seems to be a good option. I only need a bed and a shower anyway, so no need for a really fancy hotel (I did the harbour bridge climb in 2010).

Thanks for the info on the DPD. I found the thread on the forum. Gonna give it a read.
