I think they will be extended again they have to be, I have 2 expiring in Feb as well....

I'm in the same situation of needing to use my Amex Travel Credit before cancelling my card. Trying to decide if I should book a flight for the far future. Alternatively I wonder which flights are guaranteed to be cancelled at the end of this month :).

so if I book a flight from sydney to perth this weekend, the flight will be cancelled and I will get a refund ?

The flight is unlikely to get cancelled. The carriers are running a bare minimum service at the moment and it's getting underwritten by the government through the Domestic Aviation Network Support (DANS) program, so the flight will almost certainly operate.

As an alternative (and I've no idea if this would work) you could try booking a flexible hotel booking, waiting a few days and then cancelling it and see what happens.

How long before expired travel credits get extended in the system?

My travel credit expired on 03/12/20 and I still couldn't see it on the Amex travel website, it only shows the $400 travel credit for the following year that expires on 03/12/21, do I need to call Amex?

same. my partner's unused credit expired on 10 December and now shows $400 expiring 10 Dec 21. He's so unorganized that doesn't even know if he received the extension email from Amex.... But reading posts above, looks like it will automatically be reflected in your account from 5 January?

Good point, time to wait until 5th of Jan.

I confirmed extension to 31 Mar by video chat but they also said it may take 6-8 weeks to be applied! Wont leave much time to book though I suspect the actual time will be much less, they are just setting the bar low so its easy to beat.

This is what I can see from my account:
$200 Travel Credit Extension Exp 31/03/21
$400 Travel Credit Extension Exp 31/03/21
$400 Travel Credit Exp 12/10/21
$200 Travel Credit Exp 03/11/21
I think the e-mail notice from AmEx did say that it may take up to a few weeks to be extended. I suspect, what they are doing, is running some report manually, once a while, to catch expired credits, then create an upload file to load the credits back.

Has anybody had an extended travel credit re-extended for a second time?

I wish Amex would just allow travel credits under ascent (and ascent premium) to be used for shopping at say the Qantas store or David Jones. I also have extended travel credits expiring in March but still have no good way of using it for travel.

Mine expires on the 14th of January and I have had no extensions. Has anyone had any luck extending it recently

Via chat function I was told that my extended credit due to expire 31/12 would be extended until 31/3/21. It is still showing an expiry date for 31/12 though.

Book a hotel in a large regional town?
I have looked at booking accommodation, unfortunately most rates I have seen available are non-refundable rates. I am not booking anything that can't be cancelled.

Correct, the e-mail did state that it would be renewed after expiry date.

Hence don't book too far ahead, and don't book too far away. Book somewhere local. I have personally done 2 road trips within NSW in the last few weeks.

Iā€™m only looking within local areas. I provided feedback to Amex about the inability to book refundable accommodation.

But if you cancel a refundable booking, you won't get the travel credit back.

Makes it risky to book anything more than a few days in the future.

Edit: In some ways, one might as well book the non refundable rate if it is cheaper since the travel credit is effectively non refundable.
