Amex Shop Small 5 bonus points per dollar - Aug 2025

There was a teaser in the Amex email received yesterday but you'll have to forgive me for not getting excited about 5pts/$ at small retailers. Also forgive my greed but it is not enough of an inducement to go out of my way to visit such retailers, in the same way that I don't rush to buy deli products at Coles because there's a 5x FB points offer. It's handy if it happens, but hard to get excited for what would for me amount to a few hundred points. Hopefully someone will find a loophole and we can pay health insurance, rates or some other substantial bill at a "small retailer".

I am a retailer who accepts Amex and just had an Amex rep pop in to drop off some signage - signage says '5 bonus points per $1 spent - save the offer from 01/08/2025 and spend at participating businesses by 31/08/2025'.

Finally a decent Shop Small offer!
Thanks for the heads up

In reality its only 2.33 frequent flyer points per $ spent on say an Explorer 2+5=7/3=2.33
Plenty of other ways to get better discounts without using the Amex, eg giftcards at cafes etc.

Out of interest do retailers pay extra fees when a customer uses Restaurant Choice etc?

Not sure, I am a hifi retailer. We do pay more in merchant fees with Amex than other cards (and compared to other card providers, Amex are cough to deal with when it comes to processing card refunds), but I still don't charge customers a surcharge.

But on say the Qantas Amex Ultimate it would be 1.25 + 5 = 6.25 QFF points per $1 spend. I assume my local chinese takeout and cafe which both take amex surcharge free will qualify.
Bonus points work out great on a VA or QF card. Need to upgrade

SS promo has gone live but only on my QF Small Biz CC (not on my Gold CC so far).

Pathetic offer
Saved to my Plat charge and reserve credit card though...

How good was this offer

I only got it on my Velocity Escape card and not my main standard Elevate card. Says limited to 7000 cards :/

Interesting, Qantas Ultimate limited to 30,000 cardholders, didn't realise the limits were per brand

$200 would cover coffees for the month, totally achievable

I no longer have a amex and remember those ss offers.
They were great, it makes me both sad and angry with all these reductions

The $10 off $20, then became $10 of $30, then $50,
Then limited from 2 times per merchant to 5 times per card,

Bonus 1000pts per card i wouldn't even sneeze at. That's like a few $value on a $250 purchase

*from a butthurt consumer

Fascinating to see that qff cardholders get the same max cap (1000 points) as ascent / premium cardholders, even though on my plat 1000 points converts to 500 qff points. Why are we getting shortchanged??IMG_1720.jpeg
