Amex Platinum Edge Card, with 20000 joining bonus

Meanwhile as you get a return flight and 20,000 points for the $149 this is up there with the free first year offers of a few years back. So it looks like Amex is getting more generous in hunting new business again.

Competition is def heating up again!

Soon enough we will see fee free first year offers back IMHO.

Just wish the flight was with QF.

oh, sad me

does this mean the 20k pt bonus link isn't for plebes like me? And after filling in all that form... :(

I'd say possibly a website issue. If no luck later you can always call and have them send out a form via snail mail.

well the normal form won't have the 20000 joining bonus, since the link from the main amex page also doesn't have it.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

My renewal date is coming up on My Amex Platinum (which was upgraded from the Maximiser when it was ceased last year at alower cost that the Full plat, but without the flight benefit).

I will give strong consideration to moving to this Amex as I:

  • Have a goodly balance of Points in Mileage Rewards I do not want to lose, or yet move to a FF Program (I already have large balance at SQ suffice for several years of holidays)
  • Currently have been getting the Westpac KF Amex/Visa for free.
So combining this card with the Westpac one will allow me to:

  • Supercharge my earning rate by selecting the highest earning rate for the particular spend. (I would guess an extra 15-20K per year)
  • Keep my MR Balance warehoused, and available for various redemption opportunities.
  • Do so cost-effectively for free given the flight benefit.
  • Get 20,000 points up front.

We are in much the same situation.
I have an Amex Platinum (upgraded from Maximiser) and Westpac KF (free for now).
My husband has an Amex Gold Charge. He doesn't use it, but has a heap of points he doesn't want to redeem as yet. It seems the best plan would be for him to get the Edge card and cancel his charge card.

I phoned and asked a few questions. At first I was told he would have to redeem his points before cancelling his charge card, but then I was told he could transfer them to the new card because his card is already linked to Ascent. I was also told I could use the free flight as the supplementary card holder.

Sounds right to me, but I thought I'd check to see if anyone has had any problems transferring points from a Charge Card to Credit Card, or redeeming a free flight for a non-primary card holder.

I have the Qantas Amex Ultimate Card and was told I could nominate anyone to have the free flight (In the end I used it myself but the option was there). Given this is a slightly different product, it may be more restrictive. What does it say in the T&C's?

re: the transferring of points, if it was me I would want some confirmation in writing - would suck to lose so many thousand points!

Has anyone confirmed whether the 20,000 points is available to existing customers? I tried to work out from the T&C of the card, posts n here and gave them a call - AMEX said they'd call me back but that was 5 business days ago...

I'm wanting to switch from the Qantas Ultimate card as the annual fee is pretty steep and being CBR based the included flights are very limited - SYD and MEL only. On the new card, I can get an included flight to BNE, OOL, SYD, ADL, MEL or HBA. Much wider range of choices and the 20,000 would sweeten the deal.

I don't think the 20,000 pts can be transferred to a qantas account though. Only the platinum charge and the direct earn cards (ie your qantas ultimate card, etc) allow u to earn points with qantas.

... or the Platinum Credit Card if aquired in association with the Platinum Charge Card :!:

I'm very aware of that, this is part of a switch from QF to DJ across the board for my annual domestic travel, and the Membership Rewards partners (NZ/DJ/SQ/VS/CX/TG/MH) are a pretty reasonable bunch.

I think I've gotten a bit sick of being locked into QF.

This card does look good value and I will be moving my new Reserve Card to Edge Card in the next week or so, as I'm just waiting for the balance of my Ascent points to reach the SQ KF account.

At $149 compared to $395 for the Reserve card, the Edge looks good, although the 1:1 for other spend seems acceptable. That's OK as in my situation, I have an ANZ QF PLT card that earns the 1:1.5 (to QF though) for other purchases :) And Edge to take care of my grocery and petrol needs.

At $450 p.a in card cost, I'm projecting that I can earn about 100K QF points and 50K SQ per year through card spend. Not bad value in my case :)

Can someone advise whether the Edge card:

- Free flight can be redeemed immediately without having to spend any Virgin products (unlike Qantas Ultimate Amex where you have to spend something on Qantas to get the free flights)?
- What class of ticket does Amex book this into? Is it GO fare? Or Blue Saver?

I am tempted with this card given that I am looking for SYD-ADL return redemption for January 2011, and the ticket alone would cost more than th annual fee ....

I spoke with Amex CSR and found out that:

- As long as annual fee is charged, I can immediately redeem the Virgin flight (unlike Qantas Ultimate Amex where I have to spend on QF first before I get the flight).

- The CSR told me that they actually booked on Blue Saver fare for the free flight. I checked virgin website, and asked them some specific dates for SYD-ADL, and it seemed that they have plenty of flights available, even when Virginblue.com.au shows the cost of one way up to $189 (normally $119).

So with this card I would get at least $238 value for only $149 (as I always travel SYD-ADL), not to mention not having to buy any DJ services before redemption, plus the 20K points. Excellent value!

My wife just got mail from her CPA magazine. Amex now has an offer for CPA members CPA Amex Platinum Edge Credit Card, with the following features:

- $99 annual fee
- Choice of enrolling to MR Ascent, or Qantas Direct
- If choosing MR Ascent, then get free domestic flight (none for Qantas direct)
- 3x for supermarkets, 2x for petrol stations, 1x for rest
- If approved and spent $500 by end of December, then get $200 Westfield voucher (ie no 20000 points).

So if you are one of those association members getting those Amex offers, maybe you should wait until your association provide you with new Amex Plat Edge offers.

Don't you also get 0% interest rate on purchases for first 6 months?

Re: AMEX Platinum Edge Credit Card 20,000 bonus points (valid to 1 March 2011)

To receive the 20,000 points do you have to spend $500 in EACH of the first two months? i.e. minimum $1000 spend, or a total of $500 for the entire two month period?

What did the T&C say when you read it? Isn't it clear?
