Port Vila in Vanuatu - shops and restaurants accept Amex fairly widely however pretty much all surcharge at least 3% for all cards.

Went to 'ol McDonalds on the way into work this morning for some breakfast. Present the amex 'Terminal - No answer' Knowing full well that all my cards are fine. Try different amex card same deal. Manager come's out and tells me they don't accept Amex.

I tell him I come here 3-4 times a week (bad i know!) and there is never a problem... I then point to the promo they had up about Amex being accepted. He then tells me 'its a new thing we dont accept':D

Moral of the story: The donkeys had no idea!

Look, wouldn't it be easier to have a sticky thread where we all can list down all vendors that do accept AMEX and do not charge Surcharge.

That way, you are practically hurting where it matters.

I agree with you.

The problem is one of list maintenance. If we just list stuff that works post after post, we end up with a 400 page thread which no-one can usefully get anything out of. Need a wiki or a benevolent poster who is willing to continually update their first post with new information as it comes up.

As of a couple weeks ago, 'The Office' bar and bistro is nwr surcharging 2.33% on AMEX. I've been eating here for 3 years every Friday but it looks like I'm going to have to find another venue.

Yep and that is exactly what you should do!!!

If a business is going to surchage Amex they should only surcharge the additional cost of Amex vs. VI/MC

So in most cases about 1%

If they want to charge 2.33% for Amex they should be charging about 1% for VI/MC as well.

Retail merchant fees that are fairly easy to obtain

0.8% for VI/MC
1.9% for Amex

I was at Anaconda today and noticed they are now charging 2.5% for amex..

Not happy with that one...

I was in a shop recently and asked "Do you accept Amex"? The lady looks at me, and says (with a straight face). Not yet, actually I need to follow them up because I was supposed to get a phonecall from them today.

So she sounded like she wanted to accept Amex, but they were dragging their heels with getting her signed up. A little surprising.

They are VERY hard to deal with. A friend of mine recently started re-accepting Amex and the red tape was painful!

Misty diners at Prahan is charging 5% for AMEX.. that is really too much!!

I received a brochure with my current statement, that brochure tells you that "earn rewards around with 100% acceptance". It lists most common stores inl TELSTRA & MARCS, but both end up with surcharge.

I think AMEX is not working on the surcharge part but would rather focus on the acceptance, well if place surcharges me for this card, I just treat as not 100% acceptance or should AMEX change to 100% with conditions. lol

Have discovered that Billy Hyde (music stores that were bought out by Allans Music) today introduced a 2% surcharge for Amex & Diners... no surprise really, as Allans have surcharged for years... Although you can still buy an unlimited number of gift cards through their website (with no Amex surcharge), and just use them to buy whatever you want in-store... Still, doesn't give me any motivation to shop there when none of their competitors surcharge...

I know a few of us on here are with Energy Australia for their electricty and gas as they accept Amex via direct debit and and over the phone.

Received a letter today saying that Tru Energy has purchased Energy Australia.

Tru Energy do NOT accept Amex... Matter of time I feel before Amex is ditched.....

They have said that current direct debit/payment arrangements will stay....

A quick Google indicates that

Lumo Energy | Gas and Electricity Retailers - Happily welcome Amex with an add on their homepage
Click Energy - Cheap electricity prices | Save on electricity bills - Happily welcome Amex and seem to be quite good for my area. Rates already cheaper than what I am paying now PLUS 7% off, PLUS 5% off in Summer!!!

Nice, looks like I'll be leaving TXU again!:D

They did an ad campaign highlighting their amex acceptance.....however one of my client uses them and their customer service is abominable so beware

Lumo Energy also recently had a similar looking advertisement (to that on their homepage) in the DJ BNE terminal advising of their Amex acceptance... I don't understand why *all* utilities wouldn't just accept Amex, and just apply a surcharge if they felt the need to (as almost all telcos do these days)... Sure beats telling customers that their money isn't welcome, even if they're happy to cover transaction costs!

The rewards I earn on my Amex Plat are valued (to me) at 9% of purchase value, my Amex Gold at 6%, and my two MasterCards at 3%.. so I would much rather the chance to pay a few % more on the invoice and earn triple the points... (although, not having a surcharge at all would be much better of course :p)

Also, the other night was the first time I'd been in a restaurant that surcharged for Amex/Diners... didn't realise until after we sat down (it was clearly stated on every page on the menu, however), but we only went there because we had a 25% off voucher... safe to say I won't be returning in a hurry! The most annoying thing about the restaurant is that they operate a take-away right next door (with the same name), but they don't surcharge, despite most likely having much lower margin to the main restaurant!

... go figure!
