Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

The reason retention offers are not offered has been well canvassed in this thread, the CC companies are not allowed to offer them.

Which is why they weren't offering retention offers. Instead they gave you an offer to re-open a closed credit card. I suspect the legal teams have decided that this area is perhaps a little too grey.

Yes, I’ve always thought there may be options if you don’t open with “I’m going to cancel …” but as you suggest these may be too close to the wind legally and Amex have put in the too hard basket as they’d need to be very careful about what (sometimes somewhat poorly trained) CSRs say.

I’m about to cancel my charge, keen to hear about what options I have before doing it.

If I can’t get anything or something of value I will sit out the 18 months

I'd love to churn the charge but I get more than the annual fee in value so would just never do it unfortunately. But putting through 120K each year through it. Unfortunately I held another AMEX when I applied for the Charge so never got any points upon sign up.

Earlier this year there was nothing on offer for me. They offered to downgrade to a couple of lower charge cards but that didn't suit me. Like @comehither I get back more than the annual fee in value, so it's a keeper for me.

It seems like retention offers for Plat Charge cardholders dried up from February onwards, in this thread anyway (I got my offer in late January).

what is the usual elapsed time between cancelled card and applying for a new card, there is a pretty good offer for a biz card , closes end of November

I'll be calling during the week

Plat Charge
So funnily enough I only just noticed that the previous Platinum concierge service is now gone (I live in SG so I have only half my eye on what's happening with my card)

Prior, the SG version of this card was a bit meh but after I realised the platinum concierge went away in Aus today ... I rechecked and yep, It's Time to switch over from Aus to SG.

I recently emptied the points with some redemptions so... It will be interesting to see if they'll offer me anything, given I'm actually actually going to close the card vs maybe actually like before.

I'll post the data point once my Singapore platinum charge is all sorted out.

Godspeed guys.

Interesting data points just on the current shift over:
  • Singapore side is very manual - there’s no like, microsite to sign up new supp cards or enrol yourself into the various hotel benefits, someone will call me once my package arrives and step me through all of that.
  • Approval was basically instant which is pretty interesting - overnight in fact - and the package is due to arrive 1-2 days
  • They’ve said that enrolling into all the various hotel schemes and stuff takes 4-6 weeks - which is interesting because the aus side is basically instant… so my phone call with Aus may be put off by a few weeks as everything gets updated
  • They’ve basically said they’d take care of everything for me - this reminds me of the platinum charge lvel service from 2018 or so…
FWIW guys :)

But do you get sign up bonus again?
So the sign-bonus here in SG is a bit pitiful - 90k points with 8k spend in 3m or 45k points flat out.

This is in comparison to the current 150k / 5k offer in australia - this is offset by the fact that my my primary transfer partner is Krisflyer (3:1 in aus vs 2.25:1 here)

I did ask if there was anything more they could give me but yeah… nah… I do however get to keep my “member from” year LOL fwiw
