Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

Amex Platinum Edge - renewal bonus 80k

Called up the support line, annual fee charged early July, mentioned about cost of card against the lack of travel credit flexibility. Expressed willingness to cancel the card if no value can be obtained. Consultant put me on hold and came back with an offer of 80k points. Accepted and points dropped in 2 days after. Also have a Platinum Charge card linked to the account,

I did the same thing for my Plat Edge, and the consultant just read the mandate script and canceled my card, no points offered.

Nice! Which card? You should've recorded the conversation and share with us :)
Reserve. It used to be free with my personal platinum. When I cancelled personal (I still have some corporate cards) they threw some points at me to keep it for $395/year. I think I spent about $3k on it last year because the MR points are not as good.
I honestly thought it was gone for good this year when they told me "no more retentions in Australia", then they transferred me to cancellations offshore and voila. Caught in a nice glitch I guess.

What sort of language are you using in conversation with customer service? As in, what did you say?
It’s a computer program that spits out the bonuses. ‘Customer Service’ just does the key strokes. 😀

I threatened to cancel today based on the end of the AFR subscription. Was hoping for 30k points and was offered 150k!

Average spend about $5k a month.
12 months later I called up again to cancel my Plat Charge card. I've barely been using it recently as I have a higher earning card although I did put on a $9k spend last month.

They told me I wasn't eligible for the annual fee refund as I've just ticked over 30 days since it was charged. I was offered 180k points to keep it which I accepted.

Did you call them months before renewal or upon receiving the statement.

Just got 200k for my Platinum Charge (last year was 120k).

For reference I used to put upwards of $100k> per year spend on the card but that has dropped to <$20k over the past 12 months.

Still have Platinum Reserve linked to it with the no yearly fee + $400 Travel Credit deal. So am a bit afraid to call up and do the dance with that one. Got 40k from that last year but all this talk of now having to re-apply after cancelling credit cards has me spooked. Shall I risk it?

Nice one. Did you have to cancel it, be read the terms, and then have it reinstated? Or they offer it to you without that?

I feel like they wouldn't offer that many points to keep it if you still had it under the no annual fee deal

I got nothing for my Plat Charge as retention bonus. Fees due in soon, not sure AMEX will offer anything.

Once I was told there was no retention bonus, I said I wanted to cancel. They said I'm going to transfer you to the cancellation team (which I thought I was already talking to). As I had already been told no-go, I was surprised when the guy said, without any prompting, we are able to offer you points to keep your card.
I agree, they could probably care less if I threatened to give back a free card.

Is this the platinum charge card?

Yes. Manila works in mysterious ways

Been reading this thread and thought I would give it a crack. 40K offer after the spiel. AMEX QFF had it for 3 years, limited spend - all up about $10k over the 3 years. Worth the 5min on the phone. They asked why I was canceling and mentioned the limited opportunites to use the travel credit over the past 2 years, but would consider keeping it if there was a retention bonus. She came back with the 40k offer.

I feel like 40k is my threshold for retaining this card; glad to hear of your experience.
