Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

It’s 18 months so a long time to be in the wilderness from Amex but why not if it’s worth your while to do so.

Thanks, I thought so.

Yea honestly keeping the Amex with the boring shopping credits with the 'Timbuktu Fairy Wings' shop and still coughpy acceptance plus buggy Amex travel vouchers wasn't worth it (for me), so clearing it out and marking to grab a nice big bonus in 18 months is worth it more for me. Feels good! And I'll grab some other bank bonuses along the way too.

So just did the dance on my Plat charge card as the annual fee is coming up at the end of the month, spend is $10k per month.

Was offered a downgrade to the Gold charge card or 70k MR points

I took the points

Thanks @sudoer for the advice in this thread
So now there is still gold personal charge card? Astonishing

Just got my plat charge card and paid first annual fee, sorry this Q maybe dumb but when is it ideal to start this "cancelation dance"? Like holding the card for around a year with some fair spending and before the 1st year anniversary?

Seemingly only offered for downgrades and not new sign-ups.

At the start of month 13. They won't charge the AF until the end of that billing cycle.

I asked for a retention offer before reaching my 1st anniversary with the plat charge. Didn't get it as they said I've only had it for a year.

Got to my 2nd anniversary in December and got one when I asked.

Re gold charge - really? I did hear that even downgrade they wont offer gold, i may ask if thats an option.
Re timing - thanks, so basically on the 13th month of membership

Has someone done a scale (spreadsheet) of results? Monthly spend, retention bonus, annual/biennial?
If someone had that data i will be really thankful to that genius hahaha

thanks, so you mean after you paid 2nd annual fee?

I am sure this won't follow a trend. The retention bonus is AI driven with multivariate dependents - that include new sign ups, card churns, spend per month/p.a, interest rates, cancellations, economic sentiments -retail spend, number of bonus offers, card type etc. This is based on previous experience and know how of people who are in the mix. The spreadsheet would be a futile effort as the co relation you achieve from it is probably not meaningful multivariate regressive analysis!!!

Nope. So I called a few days before of when the actual bill was due which included the annual fee.

I was initially offered the downgrade to the Gold Charge Card, similar to my experience when I tried to ask for an offer after hitting my 1st year anniversary.

When I did the cancellation dance, that's when something popped up in the system on their end and they offered me bonus points instead. Which I did end up taking.

Ah so you mean call before 2nd annual fee due? Yeah i may hold the card until 1st anniversary and see whats going on. Hopefully they can give me some bonus points

Yep, I already received the bill which had the annual fee in it. Payment was literally due in a few days since I was contemplating on whether to keep the card or not.

But the advice on this thread has been really good and that is to go do the cancellation dance rather than being vague and asking for an offer directly.

about the "cancellation dance" if we call and they finally cancel the card at the end , could we still re-instate the card within 30 days ? Plat Charge and Explorer

I did cancel my Amex David Jones last year and they can't re-instate it
