Amex "I'm going to cancel my card" - bonus points given thread.

AF for Plat Charge has hit and called last week to see what they can do. Firstly to waive the annual fee which they said no. This led the conversation to whether MR points can be offered in return of the annual fee. Said 30k and I declined stating that is not as good and to speak to her supervisor. Instead, got transferred to Supervisor whom mentioned same thing about system generated and 30k is max. Said fine, another year then.

Best of luck to everyone trying.

Forgot to mention the bonus points came in as Once Only Valued Customer Bonus. Not sure if this is a lifetime once only or potentially can happen again next renewal year.

Wrote my letter to cancel my latest NAB, then thought I could just drop the letter into bank’s internal mail. Teller said she could cancel it on the spot, and a couple of key strokes later it’s all done. I call that a bonus.

I just called suggesting I'll close my Velocity Frequent Flyer AMEX card hoping to be either waived the upcoming Annual Fee or more importantly some bonus points. Wasn't offered any Bonus Points and was only offered to transfer to the AMEX Velocity Escape card - which has no annual fee, but loss of TI, no free flight and lower earn rate. Thing I'll bin it.

I did bin the card today. Interestingly once connected you go through the telephone prompt menu which actually had an option for Press 3 (or whatever number) if you wish to close your account - normally those menus make it as hard as possible to get to the appropriate person....and then on commencement of the conversation they processed as quick as they could (with just a little hit to go to the Escape card), they seemed a little too enthusiastic about closing an account compared to previous experiences.

Call up today to see if they have anything to offer on my Explorer which annual not due until Dec , boom 100K bonus points to keep the card for another 12 months . i have received bonus in the past it look like you can only received once every 12 months .

May we know your average monthly spend? How long have you held the Explorer? Any other relevant information that could help the rest of us net a sweet 100k retention bonus?

Putting around 3-4k per month through the card , got the card for around 20 months now . i think the bonus is already on the system just call them up if you want to check and accept the offer or not if i remember correctly my last offer was around 30K points which i also happy to accept as Explorer is a keeper for me .

Thanks Billt. Do you have another Amex like a Reserve or Charge? Did you take advantage of a large sign up bonus on the Explorer? Have you referred other card holders?

FWIW, I signed up 20 months ago with the 110K bonus promotion so I expect that has something to do with the fact that they cannot offer me any retention points. I also have 'saved' over $1500 using the Amex rebates programs in that time. So clearly YMMV based on your card history, not just monthly spend.

I did take the 100K sign up bonus , also received 30K x 2 to family member back when i first sign up . do you mean you saved $1500 via cashback offer ? same with me as i saved heap with another sup card in my household . Currently hold Plat Charge ( less than $300 per month mostly on food & restaurant when amex is accepted ) and DJ card (mainly use for fuel and supermarket spend ) as well Explorer still my main card with 2 points / $

Called the Platinum Charge line on another matter this afternoon. Got through to an offshore call center which was unusual for the time of day. Thought I’d ask for a retention bonus while I was at it. None offered. I keep my Charge for the oerksndireft most of my spend to Explorer (>$10k/mth): not sure if low spend on Charge was the reason. Thought they aggregated spend across all your cards.

Called up the number on the back of the card and went through to the cancellations team in Manila (I think). Said I was re-assessing my current cards and looking to cancel my explorer card, can you offer me anything to keep me from closing my card? Only offer that they were willing to discuss was to step down to a fee free card and to refund me the annual fee since I haven't used the travel credit yet. Asked about points and was told no.

Thats strange I called a month ago and was offered nothing!good for you though!

I have never received it. this year was the first year I tried and I have had these cards for a year.

Well if they said nothing offered on the system , i would call back again in 2-3 months time . you never know what happen i have received the bonus 2 times during my 20 months membership last one was 30K Points .

The annual fee for my Charge/Reserve combo is coming up later this month. I called late last month and Amex stated 'nothing could be done'.

I note that my $300 travel credit has already come through for the Charge. Has anyone used the travel credit and then cancelled prior to the AF hitting their account? If so, did they want their money back for the credit or did they write it off?

AMEX has been strict this rule since last year, if you have used your travel credit in your anniversary year, then you will not get any refund of your annual fee in any circumstance.

In my situation, I would have used the travel credit before I have paid my annual fee and therefore would not need a refund of any sort. The question is would they charge me $300 for the travel credit if I choose to cancel the card and not pay the annual fee before it was due.
