Amex free flight upgrade?

Interesting, you'd have a different card to my 'Edge' as I can't leave the country with the free flights that come with mine - for the domestic flights you'd be able to work out exactly what VA paid for the 'free' ticket given the 5x$ rule that they have.

Oh, yeah, I have Edge & Reserve.

I receive points for both domestic and cross Tasman free flights, straight up free (not book then credit shell).

The only thing I can think of where I maybe different from you guys is I have my points credited to Virgin Atlantic.

Hello all,

Great thread. I'm a little confused as to 'exactly' what you guys are doing though.

1. You book the flight.
2. You cancel the flight with AMEX.
3. Do you ask AMEX "Can I have the credit shell reference number?" or do you ask AMEX "Can I now pay the difference to pay for a fully flex fare?"
4. Then upgrade with velocity points.

I have an AMEX Velocity platinum...

Thanks in advance for the clarification. Keen to make this happen

Just been through this - wow, what an effort.

1) Book your complimentary flight. Be aware that Amex now holds the credit shell when you will cancel, or so they say, and will not tell you the VA credit number no matter how you ask. Also be aware that the original PNR will stay in place when you cancel (next step) and route changes are not allowed.

2) Cancel the flight you just booked. In my scenario I actually cancelled a year ago and nearly lost my credit note (12 months max!). I imagine you can cancel any time _after_ ticketing. Note that ticketing is sometimes not completed until after 6pm EST, if you cancel before ticketing is complete then its like you never booked, so, wait until you get your PNR/e-ticket confirmation email. ** The cancel/rebook fee is circa AUD$107 ... take note of this as it may make the whole process not worthwhile.

3) Look at Virgin bucket availability. What most of us probably want to do is rebook this flight as a flexi and upgrade it to Business - so check the Virgin website for your route and click the 'view in points' button to get a view as to whether or not there are any J class redemption seats available - note, these are "Business Reward" seats, not 'any seat rewards'. I think VA books J upgrades into "Z" class, though its nearly impossible to see how many Z class buckets are available (not even Expert Flyer can tell you). There does appear to be a direct correlation between Z and Business Rewards however - if in any doubt, ring up Velocity and they will tell you Z class availability over the phone with the disclaimer that "this is true as of right now and could change at any moment" (fair enough).

4) Ring Amex again and quote the original PNR, which is now your credit shell, or as Amex seems to call it a 'flight hold' (???) Tell them you want to use this credit together with new money to book into a flexi fare. They won't tell you upfront what the value of the credit shell is. If this is important to your planning then make a dummy booking - they will understand and comply. Don't complete your booking in this case, just follow their prompts and gain the 'upgrade to flex' value, then call back if you have additional planning to do (this is how I did it).

5) Ok, happy now that both flex economy and Business Rewards are available for the dates/route I want to travel with a decent idea of the upgrade cost to Flexi, ring Amex back and complete the booking. Ensure they put your velocity number into the booking. Be prepared! This isn't anywhere near 'free' or even cheap. The original complimentary flight is a saver flight at some sort of contract rate, after Amex takes the AU$107 cancel/rebook fee you will have relatively little left in your credit shell.

6) Wait for your confirmation email. This is a bit of a shocker actually because it can takes hours, or might not even be completed until 1-2-3 hours after 6pm EST. All the while you live in fear that J Rewards seats will sell out.

7) Email comes and gives you your PNR and e-ticket number. Go to the VA website and attempt your Flexi to J upgrade. If all is well, this should be completely straightforward. You should be able to see you ticket by either using your PNR or by logging in to your Velocity account. I had some problems however and it might be worth a note: In my case, the PNR was correct and related to a Flexi ticket, however, somehow the e-ticket was booked as a 'saver' still, and because they didn't match the website wouldn't upgrade me (and be careful, because if they _do_ match, but are both Saver then your points upgrade cost will be huge!). I had to ring the VA GCC to find this out. Then ring Amex back and have them correct the error ... all the while aware that the J Rewards were selling out ...

8) Ultimately, your Velocity account should now show the J ticket and probably the points cost, and, interestingly, the original cost in dollars!

I've got another one of these to do before end of November and will report back here - its about the same process as its always been but you have to know what to ask for, be firm (but not impolite) and have about 1-2 hours available.

On retail pricing I am about $300 better off then if I'd simply bought the Flex and upgraded to J with points without all this stuffing around (todays Flexi return PER-MEL = $1178 + CC fee). Without a doubt the 'saved' dollar value will vary enormously with original Saver ticket price. I'm expecting SC earn and FF points as per a flexi ticket as this has been the case in previous years.

This is an important step. I recently tried to upgrade before this email by calling Velocity and Amex got all uppity which ended up making the entire process longer.

Honestly, I don't know why they just don't cut to the chase and allow an 'upgrade' option to either earn SC's and/or directly upgrade to Flexi from the complimentary flight which would have the same effect. Would save both customers and CSR's an enormous amount of phone time and stuffing about.

I have the Amex Velocity card, what are the available destinations from Perth? I can't find the map anywhere. Thanks.

Only Velocity Platinum, not Escape.

Go to Velocity Platinum web site, you will see the feature:

"Enjoy a complimentary domestic return flight with Virgin Australia to selected cities, now and every year after your first Card spend 2"

Since it has condition 2, go to the bottom "Terms And Conditions", look for point 2.

In point 2, it has "Velocity Platinum Card Benefits Terms and Conditions available here". So you click, open the PDF, go to table of content.

You will see within table of content "AMERICAN EXPRESS VELOCITY PLATINUM DOMESTIC RETURN FLIGHT TERMS AND CONDITIONS". Destinations guide is within that section, including from Perth.

Broome, Karratha, Newman,Port Hedland.

That is so coughpy haha! When I go on a trip to over east I might have to do a short visit to Another city over there to make use of it!

Thanks for the help mate!

There is anecdotal evidence that some people are still successfully booking PER-SYD using the Amex Velocity complimentary flight ... this was the norm in previous years and has only changed this year (I think). I intend to try the PER-SYD myself later this year .. otherwise, if that fails I'll do an eastern seaboard flight of some type...MEL-CNS ??

** The cancel/rebook fee is circa AUD$107 ... take note of this as it may make the whole process not worthwhile.

Quoting myself from a few posts above. Having just checked my statement, it appears that in addition to the AU$107 cancel (rebook) fee, in fact, I've been charged an additional $27. So the $107 fee might only be the cancel part of the equation as I have a memory of Amex liking to charge $27 as a booking fee.

I intend to ring them and query as I understood the price I was quoted for the Free flight->cancel->credit->rebook to Flexi was all inclusive, but now, been stung an additional 27$ (!!) Geez, its all a bit rich. Still got my value as I did a PER-MEL return, but for goodness sakes.

Thought I'd come back to this and mention that my last booking PER-SYD using Amex Plat Edge free flight, now appears on velocity as eligible for upgrade to J using both points or money ... a very good change and a decent option for those not interested in earning FF or SC (as I assume both are not collected against the zero earning original Amex fare).

I have the Amex Reserve and have never been able to upgrade this to a higher fare class since they moved across to Virgin. With Qantas it was much easier.

I have the velocity Amex platinum and i used the free flight to travel to/from PER-SYD recently. I upgraded using the online upgrade me option - $400 to business one way or 30,000 points.
When I upgrade on Qantas it's only 18,000 points which is much more reasonable IMO

I must have annoyed someone at sometime - I never seem to get any upgrademe offers less than about 440-450$ Agree that 30K from saver is too high. Even if you don't value your VFF points very highly it makes the upgrade far too expensive.

Tried this process twice today, on two separate bookings made on different days with different cards - the upgrade value is so poor now that I didn't go ahead with either.

1st flight booked last november, PER-SYD full VA flexi price today = $1278 return, cancel fee = $107, upgrade from comp flight (contract saver price...you never know what it is ..) to Flexi including the $107 change fee was quoted at $1093. This means that the original PER-SYD-PER ticket had a value circa $292 .... geez, thats some contract discount Amex is getting (!!!!).

2nd flight, booked December, PER-SYD, full VA flexi price today (as above) = $1278 return, amex/VA cancel fee = $107, upgrade to Flex price quoted, including cancel fee, $1047. Again, this implies that the original return PER-SYD in saver was worth circa $338. Its been a -long- time since I've seen a one-way fare to SYD from PER for around $160-170 ... but anyway, it is what it is.

Upgrade me money is available at min bid: $440 each way ($880 return) ... I strongly suspect that given original fare conditions there would be no SC's or FF earned if this option was chosen.

I'm always looking for opportunity to up to J, as we all are of course, but I had really hoped to take wife and I to SYD on flexi seated in J to nudge me over the line to Plat. Honestly though I'm struggling now to find a decent sounding justification and I'll probably make platinum before mid year anyway.

Take the flight as-is = $0 .... no SC or FF but honestly, 2x PAX PER-SYD-PER for $0 is pretty hard to stop thinking about.

Gamble on an upgrade me bid, that would be $440x4 = $1760 for 2PAX return and no SC or FF

Suck it up and do the Amex thing. Changeover cost me to me $1047+1093 = $2140, gain 160SC and 15,000 or more FF as well as the J seating. (2140-1760=380 = $2.30(ish) for each SC)

Amex complimentary hotel night

Don't forget the option to book a one night hotel stay instead of the flight.
Here is the list of hotels and the particular rooms you can book:
https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/pdf/Reserve-Hotel-matrix-master_Aug2014.pdf

I was not able to book a date where the room would have been over $500, but booked one where it was just under $500, so that seems to be the limit. IIRC $27 change/cancel fee, up to one week in advance, credit shell is usable up to the end of the year in case of a cancelation.

Thanks for the reminder on this - it had slipped my mind. Not many places in that list that I'd stay at, however, there are a few, particularly in MEL and BNE so I'll remember that for next year.

Re: Amex complimentary hotel night

Hey Moopere,

Have you ever tried to see if you can combine credit shells, aka do it just after your renewal? I might give it a go...

Re: Amex complimentary hotel night

is this still a valid process? I'm not interested in getting an upgrade-able ticket but rather using the credit to fly Perth to Launceston one way rather than return to melb/syd.

Can you use the credit on anything - a different route is OK?

I planned a trip with the Mrs down to Melbourne over the long weekend (completely forgetting that it was the AFL Grand Final). Amex came to the rescue with a hotel booking on the more expensive night...some of the options I was provided were not on the list. Ended up at the Royce...
