I've changed my electricity retailer to Amber and I'm pleased with the way it works. Amber is an electricity supply company that gives you access to the wholesale market.

On the wholesale Market the feed-in tariff can be as low as -4c/kWh (yes minus 4 cents) or as high as $19/kWh! Prices adjust every 5 minutes.

If you have a battery, Amber allows you to buy energy (if necessary) when it is cheap and sell it back to the grid when prices are high, or spike. Of course if the sun is shining you may not need to buy energy; instead store your excess solar and export it when prices peak. Amber's algorithm will do this for you or you can control it manually.

You still need to pay the daily access charges plus a $22 per month subscription fee. So my subscription has paid for itself.

If you join using my referral code you'll get a $30 sign-up bonus and I'll also get $30.

Looks like amber has changed the referral offer. Not sure if the code in the previous post for $30 still works.

The new offer is $10 off per month for 12 months. If you use my new code 9CFLQHYG I will also get $10 off for 12 months.

Maybe try whichever offer you prefer.

Thanks to those who have used my referral code. It has helped put me into credit for the past 6 months.

The current referral offer is still $10 per month for 12 months.

What is the typical price between 0000-0600 am?
And do you have full control of the battery 100% all the time?

One of the problems is that Amber customers promote screenshots of instantaneous amazing power prices,. but they never provide screenshot of the annual costs

Could you please provide:
Annual electricity import from the grid in kWh
Annual electricity export from the grid in kWh
Total annual cost.

Of course if the sun is shining you may not need to buy energy; instead store your excess solar and export it when prices peak
Yes, though this is a very "Amber" spiel.

There is another perspective which i think is a bit more realistic:
What is not mentioned is that if the sun is shining the FiT may well be negative meaning you pay to export - unless you can turn off solar export and/or store some of it in the battery.
Then, they say when FiT is negative you can import power and get paid for it. What they don't mention is that when fiT is negative, most people also have excess solar. Turning off solar export while importing negative FiT does not make electricity cheaper because of the sunk cost of the solar.
Then when the prices peak in the evening, the battery is used for the house loads - rather than exported. It would take a very large battery to support both exporting AND using it for household loads.
Im not sure in the final analysis it actually makes significant difference. I've got friends who have switched from Amber to another provider because while Amber has an algorithm, it is often not accurate and has ended up costing them more. Operating it manually, require significant cost to time in continually checking the Amber App and also the battery app.
