AJ gets pie in the face

A very Australian way of expressing your displeasure with a 'tall poppy'....beyond sending a cleaning bill I dont see any further action being taken against the chap.

If it was a brick, would it had made a difference? No, its still assault. No one has the right to hit me (AJ) with anything because they are displeased with me.

AJ is a professional and handled it professionally. And apparently with good humor. Good on him.

Would it have made a difference if it was a brick? Using a pie seems to indicate there was no intention to cause physical harm. Embarrassment yes. But not serious physical injury. Both might be assault, but different levels.

Last night The ABC news reported that he would be charged with giving false details. Sounds like he lied to the police when they asked him for name and address.

Now if he's a Perth local well he had better get used to staying there because hopefully all the airlines will ban him from ever flying again.

If he's from the east then maybe a long drive will teach him a lesson.

There are many legitimate ways to protest without assaulting people.

Yes it's technically assault but not very serious in the scheme of things. Not something to be applauded or celebrated (although there are some public figures where we would be justified IMHO), but still, not really that serious. Very much slap-on-the-wrist territory for the cops / court.

Plus - as a protest it really isn't that effective. No idea what his cause / message is. Simply unfurling a banner with clear wording never crossed his mind? Poor effort all round.

Just reported - apparently he doesn't seem to like AJ supporting same sex marriage.

I disagree. It was designed to humiliate him and in a very public manner. Assault is not all about physical damage.

If true then I'm disgusted. More than ever.

“My family are outraged, my wife is at my throat. I didn’t understand that I’d breached the State’s criminal code… so clearly I regret that,” Mr Overheu told 6PR radio.

“Lemon meringue appeared to be the softest (and) least likely to do any injury…he’s got a responsible job to do.
“I see myself as a law-abiding citizen so it’s no joke to do what I did yesterday morning.
“I’ve sent an email to Alan Joyce, Curtin Uni, Hyatt, offering an unreserved apology for insults, costs, whatever else.”

Interesting that the offender now acknowledged that he has committed a criminal offence.

I'm sure he does now regret the fact that he will have to front up to a court, but I cannot accept that he did not know he was breaking the law.

How can he not be aware that hitting someone with anything in the face is not a criminal offence.

To say he picked the least likely item to cause injury implies injury nonetheless can be a result.

The perpetrator has done his cause no favours, and has probably strengthened AJ's resolve to speak out on issues.

Agree. The smartest thing he can do now is keep his mouth shut and hire a good lawyer.

Am wondering if some of those previously playing the "law and order" card will now come out and support him.

every comedy show from I Love Lucy to Hey Hey it's Saturday has featured a pie-in-the-face gag. He probably thought no injury = no offence.

Of course it was designed to humiliate him, but in the scheme of things I see day-in day-out in and around the justice system it's extremely small fry in terms of severity.

It's similar to how that whilst trespass alone is certainly a criminal offence, often there'll be little consequence unless you cause some measurable damage or loss.

If he even ends up in court it'll be a sub $1k fine, 1 year good behaviour bond, apology letter to AJ, pay the cost of dry-cleaning if it was needed, and no conviction recorded. If he hadn't (allegedly) lied to the cops it'd never end up that far.

If I were the Magistrate I'd make him pay his fine to a pro-marriage equality organisation. I've seen that happen (guy who defaced a LGBTQ organisation's signage with homophobic slurs had to pay his fine to them, as well as the cost of repairs) and in this case it'd certainly be justice served.

What a wanker. As others have said though, our justice system will let everyone down. This <redacted> will walk away with a bag of boiled lollies and a cabcharge to get home, no conviction and will probably contest the charge, costing the prosecution thousands in costs to prepare a full brief. What a <redacted>

I wonder if dry cleaning would even be sufficient to restore the garments?

AJ might have to buy a whole new suit. And I'm sure he's not buying off the track, so that's a few thousand (plus a few hundred each for shirt and tie.)

Public service announcement: Please don't dry clean your suits more than once a season (if that). It's hell on the fabric.

Then we shall agree to disagree. Where do such demonstrations of differing opinions end?

I fully support AJ in this latest development.

Mr Joyce indicated he would push for charges against ex-farmer Tony Overheu, 67, who stormed the stage at a Perth business event on Tuesday to lodge a $25.95 lemon meringue pie in the chief executive's face.

Mr Overheu told radio station 6PR he objected to Qantas' support for marriage equality, which he labelled "corporate bullying aimed at social engineering".
