AJ gets pie in the face

P.S. you become the twit if you press charges against a twit.

No one presses charges in Australia. This is an American concept of how the criminal law works. In Australia the police or the DPP decide who to charge with a criminal offence.

You may have missed Alan Joyce stating: "This is in the hands of police and we should let them do their investigation."

As I have stated already I hope that he is charged (by the police). A successful prosecution (even if the punishment is light) should serve as a good warning to others that this is criminal behaviour and it comes with consequences.

I totally disagree with this. This wasnt someone flipping him the bird and hurting his feelings, this was someone that planned and approached him with the intent to physically strike him with an object.

If it was a brick, would it had made a difference? No, its still assault. No one has the right to hit me (AJ) with anything because they are displeased with me.

Making light of things is pretty much the default position of Australians generally, right? I don't think anyone has condoned the act.
Ah yes - lets all laugh it up - wasn't that long ago where there were BBQ jokes about a plane catching fire in SIN - gotta be the Ozzie way to go - OI OI OI!

I respect your contribution to this site, so let's leave it there.

Not acceptable and the perp should be charged with assault.
having said that, this would always be my first choice way to be assaulted.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

How did the old man succeed in bringing the pie to the meeting though.
And to be able to come in from the rear of the podium that AJ was on, or to come in from behind.
Brave of the old man, I would say he had guts, (I certainly would have loved to do the same thing to person at VA who decided to halve the SC earn on lower fares), ... but still/also on the other hand, AJ despite his pitfalls, deserved some protection, or dignity, knowing how some people feel about his running of QF and his personal life, (please don't ban/bar me for saying this).

Now, if I was in the security detail at that location, and I see someone bring in a bag, bigger than a laptop bag, I would be suspicious.
I clean shops, and even there, they do bag checks on my departure each day.
(1) Someone being able to bring a pie to a location, how did they succeed in bringing something like that in.
(2) How was the old man able to get behind AJ.
(3) And as the pie was raised, why didn't anyone scream out or say something. If someone had seen an old man get up, and do something abnormal, wouldn't it be the right thing to ask what was the old man up to.
Glasses/spectaclesare not cheap to replace.
Yes, brave of the old man, (the pie smearer). He had oomph! I will give him that.

Wow, I didn't realise treating all people as equals was so difficult.

...

When seated at these types of functions, invariably one's vision tends to be on either the speaker or one's food or drink (or responding to a whispered comment from the person next to you.)

If I am using the correct term, our peripheral vision at such functions is limited because of what we concentrate on. We don't expect someone to approach from the side unless the speaker (or MC) flags it.

I bet you were a fan of Ned Kelly too.

Why would anyone be suspicious of a pie during a security check?

Not that I am in security, but someone was lacking, for this to be able to pulled off.
Unless we had someone there present, who could relate the security procedure prior to entry to the venue, what we are all mumbling is/are all speculation.
Maybe if the old RR was still here, we could have passed a message on to her/him for higher management at QF, but what if something else had been brandished or thrown.
I still say that management of security for the occasion was lacking, and in a major way.
Risk analysis should have been done, which it certainly wasn't.
Eg: to be able to attend shareholder meeting, a shareholder has to bring proof of shareholdership to attend.
Was the occasion open to the public, or only to press is also an important question to ask.
If open to public, then yes, anyone can attend, but still, what did he use to bring the pie to the location.
If only press/then what credentials are asked for people at the door.
Though, I still say, the old man shouldn't have been able to pull it off.
Edit: it was a A$115 a head business breakfast.

How did the old man succeed in bringing the pie to the meeting though.. .

I took cake to a personal training session once. It's interesting what you can get away with, when its never been done before.

All this talk about pie has made me hungry.
VA have missed a trick, they should be serving pie in the lounge right now. I'd have some.

Seriously though, definitely should be charged with assault...mind you if I was AJ I'd probably see the humour in it and ask him to pay the dry cleaning bill, just out of principle. But that's me.

Why am I not surprised at how thin hides frequent-flyers posses?! :p

AJ was lucky it wasn't a shoe!

And yet luckier it was in Australia ... were it even in a country just to our north, he'd be lucky to get a shoe...

Nothing short of disgraceful - and IMHO members here making light of it need to go take a long hard look in the mirror.

Well said!

Best comment on this thread so far!

I take my hat off to AJ, that he quickly cleaned himself up and got back on the stage with the keynote speech. That takes guts!

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Deplorable as it was, you can't fault the chap's aim. And we'd call that a "Not happy, Jan" face? (source: the Oz on-line)
