I was in BNE last week and waiting in line at the Avis counter in dom. near the carousells. Guy in front of me was being served and half way through the proceeding he was heard to say "hang on a minute" and he walked away, over to the carousel to try and locate his bag(s), then wandered back to the counter and said "it wasn't mine"
As I am over 60 and a grumpy old man, I told him in no uncertain terms that it was not "Airport Etiquette" what he had done, and he was most upset that I had the audacity to front him about it. All his response was "it didnt really hold you up did it"
A few "goodonya" from others in the line.

Anybody had anything similar?

I'd have just asked that I be served and he can rejoin the end of the queue. Very arrogant behaviour of a DYKWIA that deserves to be punished.

Haven't had that, but had the opposite thing with a certain car company, where I was been served and half way through my transaction the person behind the counter stopped, yelled out to the crowd if there was any elites in the group, served them, and then went back to me.

Yes I get it, if there is a choice between serving a mere mortal or an elite, the elite gets first treatment, but once you have started to serve someone that should be it until the transaction is finished.

As for airport etiquette, there is nothing overly special about it, basically -> "think about your actions and how they are likely to affect others, and don't be a d*@k"

I often get interrupted when i'm dealing with staff in hotels or similar counters where someone will come up to the agent and ask a question, without an excuse me or beg pardon. I pull them up now telling the interuptee its rude and wait your turn! Many times the staff with thank me; worse places, India and London! The other one I love to pull people up on is when you have someone pushing in. I will tell them to get to the end of the line like the rest of us. No one has "told me off" yet except my wife who thinks I'm a grumpy 52 year old man!!!

Was that directed at you or the rude man?

At airports? Not really. Except at check-in, if people have to repack slightly, they are usually given 1-3 minutes at the counter to repack and resume. Or, once they finish repacking, they are often allowed to go next. Usually, this is not a big hairy deal.

I had the misfortune to travel on a few LCCs in Europe and the repacking some people did at check-in took much longer then 1-3 minutes. They were usually backpackers who will go to great lengths to save a dollar and if it means letting everyone behind them wait forever, so be it.

There's your problem. :)

(No jokes or anything to denigrate LCCs, but as it stands the check-in agents are there "only to do a job", not getting gold stars for efficiency).

Be careful not to say "please" and "thank you" as that may offend some people.

I often get Lambchop Jr to help at check-in/reservations queues, as there is nothing like a 4 yo using please and thank you to shame others into doing it.

I know where you mean, it's not an overly big area, so I guess it depends on whether he saw a flash of bag he thought was his go past and rushed over to grab it, before coming back fairly quickly, or if he spent a great deal of time over there. You didn't say exactly how long it took him, but if it was a quick walk over and walk back, it wouldn't have caused me that much grief ;)

YMMV
