Australian airlines and airports have attracted alot of criticism since the start of Covid for long queues and delays, cancelled flights etc.. We are not alone as this recent article indicates. Schiphol, Europe's third busiest airport, once held high for efficiency is now ranked 4th worst airport for delays and worst globally for cancellations.

Airports with the most summer delays globally

  1. Toronto Pearson International Airport (Canada): 52.5%
  2. Frankfurt Airport (Germany): 45.4%
  3. Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (France): 43.2%
  4. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (Netherlands): 41.5%
  5. London Gatwick Airport (United Kingdom): 41.1%
  6. Heathrow Airport (United Kingdom): 40.5%
  7. Munich Airport (Germany): 40.4%
  8. Athens International Airport (Greece): 37.9%
  9. Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (Australia): 34.2%
  10. Orlando International Airport (United States): 33.4%
Part of the reason is Schiphol cannot get enough security staff, who can get better pay elsewhere and sometimes simply do not turn up for work. Sounds similar to SYD airport. Another reason cited in another article is poor working conditions for baggage handlers and hence staff shortages. Sounding more and more like the strategy to sub-contract to multiple companies and play these off against each other is not paying dividends. Message there for Qantas CEO who is doing exactly this with pilots and other cabin staff?

Caveat on veracity of reporting of this 2nd tier publication site. - Leave those bags; Schiphol cancels more flights due to security shortage
Edit: There's SYD ranked at #9. It's in illustrious company.

Agree the numbers don't look good, however when you look at the catchment area of the airports other than Sydney, they have at least 20 times the people so they're not that surprising.

The article is indicating cancellations are due to staffing issues which mirrors pretty much SYD.
