Onboard Starlink Wi-Fi trial taking connectivity to the skies

Install was at least done by May 31. Turned on June 10 today. Exciting!
ATR to be installed and turned on by end of month.

Trial period is 4-6 months.


I don't have any doubts the trial will be a success but I do wonder whether Air NZ will take on the cost of installing starlink or wait for a cheaper LEO version.

I have struggled with this since moving to NZ.

One of the issues is the backhaul, ie getting the traffic of the satellite network on to the terrestrial one, sooner it happens the better the experience, and New Zealand’s locale means ground stations are hard to come by in the middle of the ocean.

I have struggled with this since moving to NZ.

They were actually well ahead of most on their international fleet, and still to this day provide it for free. Domestic was a different proposition due to satellite coverage for the original types of onboard wifi.

I haven't but there is a thread on FT about it with info on speeds and pics etc
