Airline status irrelevant for J/F flights?

Status

I think you need to do some math if you are going to do status runs.

For example, how many points will I burn flying for the sake of flying and could I make better use of those points to fly where I actually want to go?
How much will the copay be to do all those flights - is it worth the $$$ or can the money be better used elsewhere?
How long will my status last (current year + one more)?
How much international flying or domestic Y flying will I be doing which is where I think you have most to gain from WP status?

It is a bit of how long is a piece of string question IMHO as some will think it worth it and others not so.

Mrs B and I hardly ever fly international, mostly QF domestic J. Yes I am SG and Mrs B will be SG after next flight and we are happy at that. Given we fly J, I don't know that we really get any benefit from SG. Others may not agree and I'm fine with that.

I am in the "Having status whilst flying J or F is negligible" camp.

Just using ReLoad's points;

Greater awards? Negligble to me, my flying is all for leisure and thus am pretty flexible with dates, routes, timing. I understand awards can be limited.
Better seating? Maybe so, but still negligible. I can't choose row 11-13 on the A380, that's not a deal breaker. I am still in J seated right in 18A or wherever with a flat seat which is better than being a WP stuck in Y or Y+.
Luggage Allowance? Well I have never been able to get close to any J / F limits with or without status so again negligble. I recall a few years back we had a combined limit of 192kgs my partner and I for NYC-SYD flying QF, that kind of weight is crazy!
Things go wrong? It can happen, but pretty unlucky if things went pear shape and the airline provided poor service to a premium cabin flyer.
Bonus points? Its irrelevant for me as I am flying points.
Priority reservation service? Most things can be done online. With QF you probably have to pay a service fee to use that priority service anyway.
Same day lounge access? Useful in some situations, but I have the lounge before hand, and at my destination, I leave the airport as fast as I can.
Guesting? Useful in some situations but rarely do I get to fly with family/friends on the same plane.
F lounge access / luggage tags when flying J? Slightly better lounge however you're going to get nice food on the plane so filling yourself up before the flight, is kind of a waste. F luggage tags, again useful but not a deal breaker since J tags will be added. Once upon a time when I was WP, QF didn't even load my bag onto a SYD-SIN flight even though it had been tagged correctly with all the nice F priority tags they put on and everything.

But anyway my point is, if given the chance I would gladly fly J or F any day of the week without status.

+1 - exactly my thoughts

Some excellent points there Alan, I'm with you. I don't think status is relevant if you only fly premium.

The OP's Q was for "J / F" flights.

As most had alluded to, F would require no status as .... there is only the coughpit to visit from the F seat.

With J flights, status would also - in addition to points that had been mentioned - propel you higher up the totem pole when applying for a points upgrade and I'm sure with the (very) occasional op-up.

Ask yourself: will I be annoyed if I were to turn right towards row 20 despite paying full fare / points for a J seat while I secretly hope for row 12 ?

Will you yearn for an F upgrade as you have 500,000 pts in your accounts sitting in J, only to be told "Sorry, Sir. Plane is full tonight" ?

If the answers are probably YES, then - given a chance - you should aim for some status.

It's B & W in the policy with the points upgrade.

16.3.3 Flight Upgrade Awards will be awarded to Members according to their Qantas Frequent Flyer status levels in the following order: Platinum Members first, then Gold Members, then Silver Members and then Bronze Members.
