Thursday June 7, 11:01 AM Airbus could fit 1000

Airbus believes more than 1000 passengers could be squeezed into its A380 superjumbo.

Budget airlines will examine the possibility of cramming maximum numbers into the massive aircraft, the chief commercial officer of Airbus, John Leahy, told the Sydney Morning Herald.

The aircraft is currently certified to carry up to 850 passengers, although most already on order will seat about 525 depending on their class configuration.

On current designs, the aircraft's economy cabin is 10 seats wide but Leahy said it was possible to make it 11 abreast in economy to lift capacity above 1000 if the entire plane was economy class.

It was feasible that airlines which operate high density domestic routes in Japan and India could use all-economy A380s, Leahy told the newspaper.

It could also be well suited for low-cost carriers in the Asia Pacific wanting to reduce costs, he said. - Travelpress travel news

Any bets on how long the 500 odd PAX level lasts? Remember what happened with the 747.

Seeing Virgin offers more legroom in domestic economy than both Qantas and Jetstar, I think we'd best be more concerned with the thought of the QF board catching onto the idea.

If the pitch is the same, ratio of cabin crew and toilets is the same and there are three doors for exiting - I am not sure what the difference is that there are 1000 people - although I think I have had this argument with JohnK before :/

Just make sure your flight doesnt arrive soon after one of these 1000 seaters.Immigration and customs would be hell.

I guess the problem with trying to fit 1000 passengers into the plane is baggage. From all reports, there is only limited cargo space available. For short haul this will be fine, but even in an all Y config long-haul with 800 pax, there would need to be a tough policy in place to ensure there is very little excess baggage.

Just the thought of 1,000 passengers on board an aircraft is terrifying. Less passengers is one of the reasons I prefer the A330s to B747s. To fit 1,000 passengers they will more than likely install 11 seats across. Take your pick 3-5-3 or 3-4-4 or 4-3-4. I would hate to be sitting in the middle of 5 seats across. I will be trying to avoid the A380, if at all possible.

In my opinion, if the A380 idea takes off, this will be the way of air travel in the future. Most routes on full service airlines, not just QF, will slowly disappear. I can see QF keeping only SYD-LHR and SYD-LAX. The rest of the routes will be operated by JQi and DJ and I don't think you will have the new premium products installed on these aircraft.

Anyway, no point worrying about something until it happens....

I think they state in the article it will be 11 abreast. As it stands now, sometimes 9 abreast is configured 2-5-2, and yes it sucks being in the middle seat

I dont know oz_mark, I dont know if I'd be complaining about being in the middle seat of 5, if it was between members of the swedish national netball team. Could be some perks to that:D

How would you feel in the middle seat with 2 sumo wrestlers either side?

While the chances of either the swedes or the sumos is remote, given the way things work for me, one way is much more likely than the other to happen to me. And its not the netball.

I happened to be in a meeting yesterday with someone whose husband is high up at Qantas (actual title deliberately withheld) and he was one of only 30 something people aboard the A380 yesterday.

She confirmed that Qantas intends to configure its A380s to carry just over 500 pax, with one of the major changes being an expanded J class.

I have stopped requesting seat changes in the QP nowadays, because everytime (well nearly) that I have in the past, I get on board and find that the pax sitting in the seat next to my originally assigned seat is some gorgeous drop dead babe (for those who feel sidelined in this thread please replace with hunky bloke) and that I end up sitting next to a bloke that has bad BO, is a POS, falls asleep facing you breathing their bad breath all over me and snores so loud that ear plugs, the IFE at fufll volume and the engines at full rev on take off wont drown the noise out.  :(

So like Earl I now believe in Kharma and stay with my allocation.

Have we been on the same flight? :p
