I read your entire post, not a single sentence. And it pretty much consisted of a single question. Sorry that you thought I was jumping on you, but your question really didn't make any sense to me.

That is ok that it did not make sense to you.

But I was replying dajop to determine what rate they, dajop, were accruing points at MR....ie what rate would he be accruing at to get the 100 points in the example (from his response I knew it was not 1.5 and guessed it he was on 1.0).

My interest is as stated that I have both Altitude and Amex cards.

NZ flights using MR points 30% cheaper than QF

The NZ flights are good value on the short haul. They are significantly cheaper than the QF AnySeat and Classic rewards when there is a discounted fare on offer.

Based on a return trip, the current NZ sale fare SYD-AKL can get you seats for 142 APD's (which is 14200 MR points) or A$142 cash, plus taxes etc of A$243.32

On QF, with Classic you will pay 36000 MR points for the same sector, plus taxes of $245.44 or you can buy the red e-deal fare for A$182 plus the taxes.

QF AnySeat will see you spend 56,666 MR points, with no taxes or 36000 MR points plus A$245.44 (the same as the Classic seat).

I performed a number of different date searches and the above fares were indicative of current sale fares available. These NZ and QF fares were based on the lowest fare for same time and day.

The NZ flights save you 11800 MR points. Whether one argues that this is the best use of points due to the cheap fare and instead decide to save the points for upgrades, purchase of longhaul or J seats, that all comes to down to individual choice.

The fact is, dollar for dollar NZ beats QF when using MR for fares less than A$360 return (ex taxes). In this instance the argument is still quite compelling at 30+% less than QF Classic, if you front up with the tax $$.

I have not re-checked this again after QF announced the reduction in fuel levy, however one would suspect NZ will follow and the above comparison will still be valid, albeit with lower taxes.

.

Also can be worthwhile for individual domestic sectors within NZ, so on JQ/QF you can travel a single sector for 8000pt, this is equivalent to fares for 80AUD=95NZD. Aside from the fact that NZ fly to a lot more places than QF do/JQ will.

It is actually better though if you have an altitude Amex - in your example above you'd only need to the equivalent of 11,360 QFF pts!

Wonder what the transtasman comparison is compared to Velocity on DJ?

Going OT here and beating an old drum yet again. (Apologies where appropriate)

I personally would never transfer any points from anywhere to Air New Zealand.

I have too many friends who were severely affected by the Air New Zealand systematic disassembly and trashing of Ansett to ever have any dealing with Air New Zealand unless there is no other option :!:

straitman, you seem to forget that Ansett was a basket case well before NZ got involved. They would have self destructed with or without NZ's involvement.

The airline today is a far cry from the one that was stupid enough to get involved in AN and none of the management team are there any longer. I don't fly them very often due to our contract with QF, however given the choice, I would fly NZ where possible.

Get over your hangups and give them a try - you may find that you enjoy flying with them (god forbid!!)

Ansett had been strpiped once but could/would have survived if they had not been systematically stripped completely a second time. If you need some facts they are readily available. Newer parts transfered to NZ a/c and old parts to Ansett a/c etc. These are not urban myths, they are fact.

Yep, the management team got their pay out but the workers have still not got all their entitlements.

There are some things in life that you don't get over :!: The Air New Zealand fiasco with Ansett is one of them in my case. As I said I saw too many lives either destroyed or lost by this debarkle and too many life time friends who still can't talk to each other.

I will fly Air New Zealand as I consider they are safe but I won't fly them by choice.

When AirNZ return my 60,000 GR points I'll fly them by choice;):D

But I do understand they are a very different beast now compared to the corrupt old boys club they used to be.

Thanks pauly7,

I'll add the 148,000 points I lost to my list of demands :!:

Add another 500,000 to the septic count

Based on your prices, using AMEX's travelkey service it would cost you about:

QF: 42,700 MR points, plus you'll get SC and FF points for the flight.

Air NZ: 38,500 MR points and you'd earn whatever you get in the Air NZ program...

Of course that is based on using your points to pay for the airfare and tazxes too..

Interesting. I use the free enrolment promotion to get an Air-points account.

I moved to NZ and now have been comped GE.

I have a booking AKL-LAX return for next year (for NZD933) and wish to upgrade to PE (J service, Y+ seating).

This is 220 airbucks - as a GE the upgrade is a shoe-in.

The promo finished in May, however I transferred 22,000 MR points to AirNZ for my first

220 - lo and behold I was credited

277.50 at an exchange rate of 0.7928.
