Air New Zealand Delays/Cancellations

Thursday 28 July has NZ101, the 0700 hours morning AKL - SYD not having taken off until 0818, so A321 ZK-NNB should arrive at about 0933 hours, 53 minutes behind the timetable.

Another cancellation, but on Sunday 31 July, is the 1915 hours SYD - AKL, NZ110.

Weather must partly be to blame but there's an enormous amount of unpunctual flights across the Tasman. Not so many years ago, most were reliable and pretty much on time. Slow luggage handling, staff absences due to the flu or COVID-19 or tardy security screening may also be causes, along with how delays lead at times to airline crews being out of position, or required to take more rest before they can man another flight.

My mum was on NZ 212 this morning Mel-CHC and they sat on the tarmac for an hour after the scheduled departure time apparently due to an issue with a conveyer belt for the luggage. At least they waited for it to be fixed so they arrive with their luggage.

NZ232, the Wednesday 3 August A320 (ZK-NHA) at 0910 hours did not take off until 1204 hours from SYD with ZQN arrival estimated as 1640 hours, 145 minutes late. This was because the inbound flight (NZ245, the 0630 hours WLG to SYD) did not become airborne until 0856 hours, arriving at gate at 1025, 135 late.

In turn this will delay the 1515 hours ZQN back to SYD NZ231 and the evening 1915 hours NZ228 to CHC from SYD.

A320 ZK-NHA on the Friday 5 August 2022 NZ232 (0910 hours SYD up to ZQN) took off at 1024, arriving at 1456 hours mid afternoon, 41 minutes behind the timetable. It's now on returning NZ231, the 1515 hours in the sky at 1629, expecting to arrive at its SYD gate at 1807 hours, 97 minutes late partly due to excess time on the ground in Queenstown (NZ not Tasmania). In turn, this will delay NZ228, the 1805 hours to CHC that most unrealistically is claimed by FR24 to be pushing back at 1840 hours. A 33 minute turnaround? Extremely unlikely.

ZK-NHF operated the midmorning 0925 hours SYD - WLG NZ246, arriving 28 late at 1508, but the 1545 hours WLG - BNE (NZ271) that it was meant to form became a cancellation.

NZ102 (ZK-NNC, 0955 hours SYD up to AKL) was in the sky at 1124 hours so arrival at 1622 was 77 minutes behind schedule. It was supposedly then to operate the 1620 hours AKL - SYD NZ109 but this was also cancelled.

NZ104 (early lunchtime 1155 hours SYD - AKL, B789 ZK-NZN) was airborne at 1303 hours, arriving the northern NZ harbour city at 1745, 50 late, better than yesterday's 1841 hours at gate arrival.

Partly due to adverse weather, there are many TransTasman delays.

On Monday 21 August, NZ110 (A321 ZK-NND, the 1915 hours early evening SYD up to AKL) was airborne at 2105 hours so arrival should be at 0144 hours on Tuesday 23, 79 minutes late. However the inbound NZ109 (1620 ex AKL) was only 22 late into SYD, arrfiving at gate at 1822, so the aircraft spent considerable time on the ground.

Sunday 11 September has NZ102 (A321 ZK-NNF) arriving at a likely at gate time of 1919 hours, 79 late for its AKL-SYD journey.

Timekeeping on many TransTasman services continues to be highly variable but overall, unsatisfactory although weather may be playing a part in this.

A week later than the previous post, NZ110 (1915 hours SYD-AKL evening flight) is predicted to push back 50 minutes late.

NZ102 (0955 hours morning SYD to AKL) and the much later early evening 1915 hours NZ110 on the same route have been cancelled on Friday 9 December 2022.

This is likely to be due to the delivery by sea of contaminated jet fuel that has led to carriers at AKL only being allocated three quarters of what they'd normally receive. The next jet fuel delivery isn't until 12 Decermber: I don't know if this means when the tanker arrives at the port, or when the fuel is available at the airport via the pipeline.

There don't appear to be any NZ cancellations from BNE, MEL or PER today.

On Sunday 11 December 2022, NZ104 (B773 ZK-OKP, this flight normally being a B789) as the 1145 hours late morning SYD-AKL did not become airborne until 1403. Arrival should be at 1844, 119 minutes tardy.

The BOM suggests that extremely heavy storms are over SYD as at 1050 hours on Monday 12 December.

It looks like the airport may be closed to flights, as NZ103 (B789 ZK-NZR, the 0900 hours AKL-SYD airborne a small number of minutes late at 0925) has been in an offshore holding pattern for quite a while. Its timetabled arrival was 1025 so it's approaching 45 minutes late by the time one allows for taxiing to arrive at its gate.
