Air New Zealand Delays/Cancellations

Monday 15 March 2021 will see NZ724, the 1210 hours MEL - AKL, cancelled. It's probably another victim of Daniel Andrews' refusal to allow inbound international flights to carry passengers into Melbourne. In contrast, Gladys Berejiklian in NSW is carrying the load of overseas arrivals.

A321 ZK-NNF on NZ878, the Sunday 28 March 2021 scheduled 1145 hours late morning MEL - AKL took off an hour later. AKL arrival at gate was 37 minutes late at 1802 hours.

NZ125 on Tuesday (30 March) was to use the same aircraft - this 1015 hours AKL - MEL has been cancelled, presumably due to the Victorian ban on inbound passengers until 8 April 2021.

Wednesday 14 April 2021 has seen NZ102 and NZ112, respectively the 1015 hours and 1900 hours SYD - AKL, cancelled.

NZ104 on the same route (the 1140 hours) also got the axe.

Under the 'Rex airlines' thread, AFFer Must...Fly! gave an example of a Saturday night NZ AKL-bound flight coming up ex Oz that has one individual booked. Amazing.

On Thursday 29 April 2021, NZ102 and NZ112 (respectively 1015 and 1900 hours SYD - AKL) have been cancelled. Competitor QFi cancelled two such flights today (28 April) with a further one to follow tomorrow, while ex MEL for AKL, tonight JQi is cancelling one.

AFFer KiwiFlyer said in the QF delays/cancellations thread that many Oz - NZ flights have recently been cancelled due to insufficient passenger demand.

Do you surmise it's due to the ongoing threat (reality for PER - NZ - PER) of border closures suddenly imposed, stranding us on the 'wrong side' or some other factors?
I think it's all of those things, and more. Really, few people want to put themselves at risk (real or perceived) at the moment.

I believe there is less pent up demand for vacation travel to NZ right now than has been spruiked.

The NZ Minister for COVID-19 embarrassed himself yesterday by stating there'd not be any changes to the Australia-New Zealand travel bubble, but within five hours, he changed his mind, massively inconveniencing travellers, and all for some tiny number of 'cases' in Sydney.

As a result for today (and, while I've yet to check, tomorrow) most Tasman flights ex (and to) SYD have been cancelled.

Ex SYD, these include NZ222 at 0825 hours to CHC, NZ232 at 0925 to skiers' paradise ZQN, NZ102 and NZ106 at 0950 and 1735 hours to AKL and NZ228 tonight at 1850 to CHC.

NZ104 at 1140 hours to AKL is however operating.

I'm not suggesting it's legal, or wise to do it but if someone made their way by any means from Sydney to Melbourne or Brisbane and then booked on a TransTasman flight from there, not sure how NZ border authorities would pick up (without a detailed search of passengers' phones or documents) that a Sydney resident was endeavouring to evade quarantine.

Flights between Sydney and NZ are also all cancelled on Sunday 9 May as the 'travel bubble' doesn't recommence until midnight on Sunday evening/Monday morning. So seven eastbound NZ flights won't operate.

Sunday 19 December 2021 has seen NZ830, the morning 0825 hours SYD - ZQN, cancelled.

Unusual that a flight on this route was even proposed due to the ban Australians entering NZ.

NZ still has MIQ (7 days isolation & quarantine) until 16 Jan. No MIQ hotels in Queenstown and NZ830 not on the list of approved incoming flights. So pax ZQN-SYD the only possibility.

The 1430 hours SYD - AKL on Tuesday 21 December 2021 with an unusual flight number of NZ1104R was cancelled.

Observing an 'R' at the end of a passenger flight is a first for me.

On Thursday 10 March 2022, NZ124 (afternoon 1255 hours MEL - AKL that took off at 1355 with B789 ZK-NZQ) arrived AKL at 1859 hours, 39 minutes behind the schedule.

NZ will soon operate many more flights to and from Oz, but on Monday 21 March 2022, offerings remained sparse as NZ104 (1215 hours SYD - AKL) took off at 1443 hours with B789 ZK-NZR. Arrival was 121 minutes late at 1921 hours.

Tuesday 5 April 2022 has seen NZ120, the 0910 hours MEL - AKL (A321N ZK-NNE) not become airborne until 1034 hours, so arrival was at 1549, 54 minutes late. This was despite the plane spending overnight in Melbourne.

NZ124 (Sunday 10 April 2022, the 1210 hours lunchtime MEL - AKL) took off at 1316 hours with B789 VH-ZNL. Arrival was at 1826 hours, 46 minutes late.

On Good Friday, 15 April 2022, NZ104, the 1155 hours SYD - AKL is expected to depart at 1545 hours mid to late afternoon, 230 minutes late. This is due to B789 ZK-NZM on the 0900 hours AKL - SYD NZ103 not predicted to push back until 1330 in the early afternoon. The aircraft arrived six minutes early in AKL this morning at 0509 hours as NZ21 from YVR, so perhaps crew are unavailable/partly struck down with COVID-19.
