Air India Delays/Cancellations

Wednesday 2 January saw AI306, the 1315 hours lunchtime DEL - MEL (B788 VT-ANN) taking off at 1433, so on Thursday 3 arrival is at 0804, 64 late. With AI309 not scheduled to depart until 1045, it should be on time, again showing the value of international airlines, where feasible with costs, slot availability and crew to schedule longer than minimum turnarounds.

Sunday 3 March 2019 finds AI301, the timetabled 1045 hours SYD - DEL (B788 VT-NAC) that took off at 1326 hours suggested as arriving at 2030 hours, 160 minutes tardy.

Three weeks after the previous post, on Sunday 24 March 2019, AI301, today the 1135 hours SYD - DEL (B788 VT-ANV) took off at 1216 with arrival suggested at 1906, 76 late.

AI301 has B788 VT-ANZ and is the 1035 hours Sunday 16 June 2019 SYD - DEL airborne at 1108. Arrival should be at 1714 hours, 39 late.

It's not what many Australians might expect given the preconceived ideas we may have about India, but AI is often punctual to and from SYD and MEL.

However on Saturday 10 August with SYD down to one runway for most flights for much of the day thus far, AI301 (1045 hours SYD up to DEL) did not take off until 1351 hours. Arrival is expected at 2154, 199 late for B788 VT-ANZ.

For the second consecutive day, AI301 is tardy (on 11 August 2019) with VT-NAC predicted to arrive 35 late in DEL at 1910 hours.

Contrary to what one may perceive of this gornment-owned, financially troubled airline, AI is generally pretty good with its timekeeping between DEL - MEL and SYD and return. However on Friday 1 November 2019, the 1015 hours AI301 did not take off until 1102 hours from SYD so arrival should be at 1800 hours, 35 late.

AI309 on Thursday 21 November 2019 from MEL to DEL is the 1045 hours with B788 VT-ANZ. There were northerlies of up to 61kmh at MEL and single runway operations, so takeoff at 1140 means suggested arrival at 1833, 53 late.

VT-ANY on Thursday 21 November formed the 1315 hours DEL down to SYD AI302 that was not airborne until 1449 hours, Friday 22 arrival should be 0757 hours, 47 minutes tardy.

On Wednesday 27 November, AI302 from DEL down to SYD (B788 VT-ANL) arrived SYD only five minutes late at 0715 hours. However, AI301, the returning schduled 1015 hours ex SYD did not take off until mid afternoon at 1556 hours, so is more than five hours late.

AI has good timekeeping to and from SYD and MEL but on Monday 3 February 2020, AI308 from DEL to MEL is arriving at 0935 hours, 95 minutes behind schedule. With the allowed time for 'reversing' in MEL being greater than the minimum needed - always wise if slots and cost considerations make it feasible - AI309 back to DEL, the 1045 hours, shoudl only - in theory - suffer a minimal delay in pushing back.

Wednesday 5 February has AI301 (B788 VT-NAA, the morning 1015 hours SYD up to DEL) in the sky at 1209 hours. Predicted arrival has become 1901 hours, 96 minutes tardy.

B788 VT-NAA is on another trip to Australia, this time as AI302, the 1315 hours afternoon Thursday 6 February ex DEL to SYD. Takeoff was at 1352. On Friday 7, arrival should be to a rainy SYD at 0749, 39 late. Not helping was the aircraft holding above Goulburn.

On Thursday 28 May 2020 during coronavirus, AI308 arrived in MEL (ex DEL) at 0632, 32 minutes tardy with B788 VT-ANZ. The return flight, the 0845 hours (AI309) was timetabled to push back at 0845 hours but has been delayed to beyond 0935 hours.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Tuesday 2 June 2020 sees the morning AI308 (0945 hours SYD - DEL) cancelled.

This is also occurring with a few other airlines including the only timetabled QFi ex Sydney tomorrow, 'the 143' across to AKL.

It means just five international passenger carrying-flights are left in tomorrow's timetable from Sydney. Very costly for the airport to have a large terminal open for so few flights.
