Hello all,

Great forum, I've just found it - but I think it will prove invaluable in the future.

I am traveling to Europe in a month or so on business and although I'm going to fly business class, I have to keep the costs down. My options seem to be:

Emirates on a A340-500 Perth - Dubai and then Dubai - Munich on a A330-200

or

Air France on a Boeing 777 Singapore - Paris

There is a small chance of flying Malaysia Air, but not sure what plane.

Which airline has the better business class? I haven't read great things about either.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would say Air France. The emirates A330-200 on the last leg is 2-3-2 which is similar to QF's domestic J

Thanks.

I've read OK things about the Malaysian business class, so I may try and do it that way also.

Forgive the probably stupid question, but what does the Y and J mean that everyone keeps referring to?

G'day Vicked, welcome to AFF. :D

Y is Generic Economy/Coach class fare booking code
J is Generic Business Class booking code

People refer to the cabin class by reference to the fare basis. The fare basis is determined by a letter.

For example on Qantas, First class is F, First Class suites are R and discount first class is A.

To simplify things we refer to teh various cabin classes as:

F - First
J - Busines
Y+/WT+/PE - Premium Economy
Y - Economy

There could be multiple fare basis codes in the Y cabin so it is easier to refer to the cabin class rather than the fare basis (different airlines use different fare basis codes) when just talking about the part of the aircraft you will be in.

Just one question in terms of cost - if you fly to Paris on AF (Air France) or Munich on EK (emirates) wont you need to somehow get to either Paris or Munich as well?

Thanks for the help on the codes!

I need to get to Seville, Spain - for simplicity's sake I was just referring to the major EU destination in the two options. Both of them then hop through Barcelona.

I don't really care what EU city I fly through, I just want to minimize travel time and discomfort - as I'm only going for 2 days, so have to do it all over again on the way back!

I heartily recommend Malaysian - great service, and if you get a 777 the pitch is huge. Seating is the angled flat variety.

Otherwise I'd go AF over Emirates. The A345 seating on Emirates is cradle type seats, and the 332 is even worse as described by ANstar.

Wow I had no idea EK J was so bad!

FWIW, my father travels F for work, but had a tight timeframe so ended up QF to SIN, AF to CDG and was more than happy with the AF J product.

Thanks.

Is the "cradle" seat, not the same as the cocoon seat referred to on the seatplans website.

I'm having trouble booking the AF fare, I found it on Orbitz - but it won't actually let me book it.

Are there any sites where I can booked mixed class fares?

Any opinions on KLM business class?

Tried to search, but KLM is too small a word for the search function.

Have a look at seatplans.com. Have a couple of reviews of KLM under tried & tested. Also worth a look at airliners.net.
