I may be paying a fare for family from dfw-bne late may '08 and return late june '08.

i've looked at air new zealand; united and qantas (usa site).

am i correct in that qantas is cheapest at us$1597. united was us$3182 and n.z. approx aust$2500.

i'm just surprised that qantas is cheapest.
cheers, trish

Hi Trish,

That may or may not be the case depending on where you're sourcing your prices from.

Generally QF do offer some reasonable non point of origin fares (ie booked in Australia but departing somewhere else, in this case USA) whereas NZ and UA don't do so much.

You may want to check with agents on the ground in the US as aside from a few airlines, point of origin is the cheapest place to purchase a fare 90% of the time.

It's all due to what routes consolidators contract, their volume of sales and therefore their ability to wield some power when negotiating fares, and agents sell 99% of their flights from point of origin, which explains the price difference.

If you don't know any agents in the US, you could try submitting an email request through Flight Centre's US site or you could visit Tripology and submit a request.

Hope this helps, all the best with it.

Hi Trish, this does sound right. QF seems to be much cheaper booked ex. US than it is ex. AU. (and ex. LHR than ex. AU) I've been watching fares LAX-BNE lately and noticed fares around US$1099. Try getting that out of BNE.

I wonder if it has something to do with the exchange rates where $1099 used to be worth a lot more to QF than it is now but they can't move the fares because of elasticity?

QF know that most Australians will use them so fares ex Aust are higher. It does cut both ways as AA have discount fares ex Aust at about $7200 in business class which can not be found on aa.com and their agents in the US have no knowledge of.Ex USA the prices are higher.

Serfty, I had looked @ the aussie airpass. I'm really going to show ignorance here but can you make your own iternary, say land in bne, fly to t'ville, then cairns and back to bne?

or can you go bne-syd-t'ville-bne? I was unsure how it works.
cheers

Give it a go, ex USA/Canada you van create you own itinerary picking the flights you want.

If crediting to AAdvantage, beware, some book into Q class (No go for aadvantage point earning) others book into S (generally the higer rate(s)).
