Air Crash Investigation

Just caught up with this thread. Yep - count me as a great fan. It's even better in HD.

On the other hand it does make me feel uncomfortable about flying given that a lot of the crashes are pilot or maintenance errors. The main consolation is that most of the incidents are several years old and we learned from them.

Its a show that makes you appreciate the skills of QANTAS crew. They don't feature very often.
I always feel safe on Australian airlines.

Another fan here, and yes I have watched it in the air. Did a DRW-ADL in March and enjoyed an episode. Don't think anyone saw me. ;)

Another series I enjoy is "Seconds from disaster".

Without pay television only see the odd episode here and there, unless they happen to fall off the Internet.

I always like how they focus on a chain of events that lead to the accident/situation and how if any one of those events didn't occur, then neither would the accident.

It's the old "Swiss cheese" principle.

"A piece of swiss cheeze has a lot of holes. If for some sequence of events or even a random reason the holes line up the piece of swiss cheese will fall apart."

It's probably the only show on TV that I will refuse to watch. Not sure why because I usually don't freak out about things. Kind of has the same effect as spiders... I can't even watch shows about spiders.

I'm happy to know that accidents happen, but I don't need to be reminded about them.

I Love it, but simply have to ban myself from watching it. I have a mild fear of fying anxiety issue that loves to come out and play, particularly after a shocking "oh my god what a prolonged and horrible way to die" episode of ACI haha...

Not watching it seems to keep me at bay.... :p

...well, that and a fast acting benzodiazepine

To be more technically correct it is called The Reason Model after James T Reason originally propounded the model.

nb the Wikipedia reference is somewhat basic, however it serves the purpose.

I'm in the DJ lounge at BNE right now and someone has commandeered one of the big viewing screens to watch Air Crash Investigation. I love the show, but i've relocated out of view!

Gee. As much as I love the show I wouldn't dare switching it on in an ariport lounge!

A gutsy move. I can almost here the howls of protest from here:!:

Personally, i just moved around the corner. I didn't hear any howls of protest and it may not have lasted long. In hindsight, it may have even been left on the channel after someone had watched something else on Nat Geo, but it was definately on the big projection screen in all its glory!

I do notice that in the DJ inflight foxtel selection, Nat Geo doesn't make the cut. I can only assume this is a major reason. I average 2 or 3 return DJ flights a week and in the period following the air france A330 disaster the screens were often locked to SKy News and the disaster story pre-flight which probably didn't help nervous flyers (myself included).

The other thing for nervous flyers are all the "what if you die in an accident?" life insurance and funeral plan ads that seemingly run 24/7 on foxtel now! Just what you need pre takeoff!

777.

Is watching ACI in flight any worse than watching Snakes on a Plane on AVOD (as QF put on as one of their in-flight films as I remember)? :D

Also one QF flight had Mythbusters with puking scenes (from being spun round in a chair, I think) - and that wasn't on AVOD but the fixed screen on a domestic flight. If it was turbulent, it could have led to a lot of mess!

I wouldn't watch ACI in flight if anyone can see me, and neither would I read the crash comic (aka Flight Safety Australia) in flight because I don't want to scare others, but in principle, I don't mind doing it myself.

As much as I love the show I wouldn't dare switching it on in an ariport lounge!

It wasn't quite the Air Crash Investigation but I found it rather amusing when there was one of the airport programmes (with really angry passengers - I think it was on easyJet) on television while waiting for a delayed flight.

I love that show! Nat Geo, Viasat Explorer and Discovery Ch are my favs :D

I just watched the episode about the 'Gimli Glider' - man, what a fantastic story. I'm sure many readers here will know it. Running out of fuel in a new 767 because of a wrong conversion to metric measures, then using a glider flying technique to bring the huge aircraft down on an old military runway being used as a drag strip. Just minor injuries on evacuation. Amazing - that they had a co-pilot who was ex-military and knew the disused runway was nearby, and a pilot who flew gliders for recreation.

By the way the series uses the expression 'mayday mayday mayday'. I was under the impression it is 'pan pan pan'.
