Hi all

my daughter is thinking of booking Air Asia to KL and then Air Asia to coughet.
Pretty good flight deal. However, are they ok. Is it a case of Tiger air but international.

I am a bit concerned as to their safety etc. Should I be.
any advice appreciated.

Hi,

AirAsia like all airlines need to maintain certain standards with regard to safety. You will have no issues with safety booking any airline that flys in Australian airspace.

All comments regarding AirAsia on this board relate to their comfort level and service level which many of us here question.

Unless your daughter is a POS she should have no worries with them. As long as she allows for the fact they a LCC and as such have very strict rules she should have a good flight at a very cheap rate.

Just bear in mind Air Asia is a point to point airline, so you will need to go through the whole collect baggage, check-in (and I guess immigration), in KUL, so allow plenty of time between flights.

My experience with them is fine, but do not forget they are a LCC and as such expect to pay for food, entertainment, blankets/pillows and luggage beyond I think 15 kilos. Paying extra for the leg room seats is money well spent in my opinion, but under NO circumstance choose the centre seat in the bulkhead row unless you are 20kilos and 10cms wide! :-(
She will have to clear customs and immigration in KUL so as suggested allow time for this.
I had an experience of being over cautious with time allowed between flights, but they will under NO circumstances allow you to take an earlier flight unless you pay again!

As pointed out many times here: You get what you pay for! :)

1. Make sure your daughter reads and understands all the terms and conditions so there will not be any suprises;
2. Double/triple check baggage allowance - otherwise a big FEE awaits;
3. BYO Drink and Food - hawker styled menu items aren't everyone's cup of noodle;
4. BYO Comfort kit and entertainment unit (nothing wrong with AirAsia ones... but ...)
5. Allow plenty of time for connections for KUL-HKT or KUL-MEL leg, AirAsia is a point-to-point carrier, it will not accept any responsibility for ANY missed connection even due to their own operation error*. Stay over night in KUL in the cheap budget hotel near LCCT is not a bad option for transit.
6. Buy a really good travel insurance!!!
7. Don't expect too much for the $ paid... actually, don't expect anything but a bus seat from A to B.

* I stand to be corrected on this point.

All in all - buckle up and enjoy the holiday.

Cheers,
Joey

I have flown Air Asia PER to DPS and found them to be quite good for the 4 hour flight. I pre-paid for luggage, a reserved seat and some food (which was OK). The seats are narrow and the pitch is tight but the aircraft was new and the crew friendly enough.

You have already been given very good advice.
I've flown Air Asia and would happily do it again. Please don't worry about your daughters safety, if I had felt at all unsafe that would have been it for me.:)

Repeating the advice already given, read and understand the T&Cs fully. If your daughter thinks her luggage will be more than 15kg, it is cheaper to prepay on the website. Leave plenty of time between connecting flights, it may be overkill but I like to stay overnight to be safe.

As far as food is concerned, I think some of the LCC's really frown on passengers bringing their own food so keep that in mind.

For flights up to 4 hours, I normally add up all the extras I will pay for, including transport from the airport, as sometimes LCC Terminals are further out. If there is still a big saving, I'll book.

I think the problem is when people book cheap tickets and expect full service. Often I'll fly business class for a long haul then do a couple of LCC short flights around the area. However I don't expect the experience to be the same.;)

well they weren't worried re passenger carryon food Air Asia coughet- HKG recently -Chinese passengers staggered on openly clutching big clear containers of food and snacks....

Suprise everyone wasn't carrying food with them!

i have flown air asia & found them to be OK ,
slightly narrower ,
one flight was delayed very slightly but caught up the time well
& another flight was canned altogether & ended up on a air Mauritius plane to KL

but please remember the following form their t & c

Unavailability of Seat: There is a chance a seat may not be available for you on your flight even if your booking is confirmed. This is due to the common practice in the airline industry of overbooking. In the event of such unavailability of seat, we shall at our option, either:

  • carry you at the earliest opportunity on another of our scheduled services on which space is available without additional charge and, where necessary, extend the validity of your booking; or
  • should you choose to travel at another time, retain the value of your fare in a credit account for your future travel provided that you must re-book within three (3) months therefrom.

10.4
Passengers are not allowed to consume their own food on board. No smoking is permitted on any of our flights.

Where an ASR is purchased, we reserve our right to assign or reassign seats at any time, even after boarding of the aircraft. This may be necessary for operational, safety or security reasons. We do not guarantee any specific seat reassignments, whether for an aisle, window, exit row, or other type of seat. We will, however, make reasonable efforts to honour paid seat assignments.

18 months ago myself and my sister flew Air Asia for 4 flights in Thailand - Bangkok/Chaing Mai, Chaing Rai and Krabi. They are a LCC so be prepared to pay.. but when you book your ticket make sure you take advanage of their "express Boarding" service - ofcourse it costs extra but it just means you;re the first to get on the plane (before the cattle crush! Im not kidding either!) Also, "hang around" the gate and keep your eye on the Gate Attendants as their PA annoucemnets are hit/miss and generally they'll just hold up an "Express Boarding" sign.. you also have to be quick as they only give you about 1 minute prior to the rest of the passengers rushing on. Have fun

Hi there

I echo the above comments, especially the overnight stay when connecting at KUL (LCCT).

The Tune hotel is fine for an overnight stay and only about A$43.
You get an excellent bed and a decent shower which is all you need really.

Don't take your cat though, as the rooms are on the small side, you won't have the room to swing it. :D

Cheers

Sorry, but that's just too broad a statement. There are any number of airlines that fly in Australian airspace that I would not fly on.

I have stayed on a couple of occasions at the Tune and agree its small but clean and the bed and shower are good. From memory check out time is 9.00 a.m. and check in time is after 2.00p.m. I have been on two flights from Oz to KL and a number of flights within asia with Air Asia. I have not had any problems with Air Asia the flights have been on time, the planes have been clean and the staff pleasant. Its not first class service but in my opinion its good value for money.

Totally agree with the above statement. I flew Bangkok-Chiang Rai, then Chaing Mai-Bangkok on Air Asia in Oct/Nov 2008. Xpress boarding was a lifesaver and I got 1C both times.

Both flights left a bit late but I got there safely which is all that matters.

I would travel them again for short haul but never for long haul. I'm built for comfort, not for speed and those seats are way too snug.

I flew mel-kul in march i took with me my ipod with lots of music and a couple of videos on it i also took some finger food and a large bottle of water (once through customs) the trick is to hope that the plane is not full and with luck you maybe able to get a row of seats to yourself as already stated they are small. No inflight portables on my flight food and drinks ok:?: all in all i was happy with the service as the motto states you get what you pay for so for the price there was no problems
I would also think twice about long hall trips for next time
