Surprising that no one has mentioned this.

I made a couple of bookings OOL-KUL, but fares not earth shattering (> $200 each way).

I thought you hated D7 and wouldn't fly with them again?

The MH sale makes this one look a little sad, unless it's easier for you to get to OOL than BNE.

Are they selling airfares for travel originating 9 months from now?

And also how does one purchase a ticket for June 2012 when it is well over 12 months from today?

They are for sale on the website.

Agree. >$400 on D7 only to KUL whereas MH is <$600 to get you anywhere in SEA. Then there's the annoying aspect of collecting luggage in KUL, re-checking in, no food or drinks on board, no entertainment and putting up with the LCCT. It's a no-brainer!
Oh, and even better is that you'll get to sit in an A330 that fits 9 across (on D7) rather than 8 across (on MH) with also less legroom.

Yes this is pretty standard for Air Asia. Have a sale for airfares at least 6-9 months in the future. Then if people need to change their flights they will often have to pay as much as the original air fare again to make a change. Or the passengers just write off the fare.

with MH's predictable, regular, low season heavy discounts, AA/AAX is becoming less and less attractive now...

in the past, when AAX first started MEL=>KUL price of AUD 189 one way is the norm, now their price is about AUD 259 for a regular fare, even with this "sale" it is still AUD 199... it is not really a sale.

During MH sale MEL<=>KUL is 5XX... the MH sale has fares covering the low seasons until Mar 2012, so there is little reason to look at this AAX sale, unless they can do return MEL<=>KUL for below 3XX. I looked at Easter 2012, and for AAX there are no sale seats.

really, who will consider AAX if the fare difference is less than 200-300 ?
1. no meals, very small seats, no entertainment for 8-9 hrs
2. terrible LCCT,
3. bad connection time means 2 extra nights at the terrible tune hotel LCCT. with the min charge is AUD 45 / nt .
4. have to pay for checked bags...
5. bad connection time means extra leave required (for leisure trips), which will wipe out all the savings....

wait until MH got their first A380, and if they use for AUS routes.... this would become even more interesting...

I've never known MH to be so aggressive with their sales. I'm not complaining though! I can't wait for their A380s to arrive next year. I think they may sway quite a few people away from SQ with their new premium products, if they're good.

I agree with FL 360.
Perhaps AA, having been prevented flying out of Sydney by Mal.gov is trying not to stir the pot too much, hoping for a change of mind later. I can't figure out AA's discounting strategy, as by the time they wake up, JQ has already got my money.
Good news for ML, that there are biters willing to desert AA and SQ if the price is right .

Yes quite true, k_sheep, but what I was actually doing was just changing the dates of a couple of bookings I already had and which I had already replaced with flights on SQ/TG.

It was either that (at a cost of approx AUD 220 for the changes) or just let the tickets lapse. I was just waiting for a fare sale of some kind. What would you have done?

And I agree with the sentiments re the comparison with MH. D7 is being a bit cute here, with its fuel surcharges on most fares.

Currently seeing MEL-(KUL)-STN for $917 ( basic, no add on's) return, out Mar 01 return MAR 25 2012.
Need to add $40 approx for one night at the Tune LCCT hotel (It's not that bad) heading up, but the return flight is a booked connection.

Optiontown upgrades for the four sectors should bring it up to about $1500 and include bags, meals etc.

Well actually I've let a few tickets lapse - bought some OOL-KUL tickets for ~$80 each during the sales, and have ended up unable to go. But claim back the taxes and it's not much :) A reasonable gamble

I'm glad it's worked out for you though! A holiday is always better than money in the bank I think :)

Current 'sale' email:

MEL-KUL $364
OOL-KUL $354

Gone are the $59 fares D7 were famous for...these seem expensive until you check out JQ pricing eg SYD-HKT $1100 rtn!
