AFF Sydney Wine Meet Ups

What an evening!
Coonawarra tasting at the Ivy was excellent, and the company was superb (onya Wozza et. al).

It was great to see (taste & smell) violets from a couple older / reserve wines presented by a couple kind / proud wineries. (violets are where it's at)

The missus and I have become accustomed to aged wines, so it was difficult for us to judge the wines on display (without age). Especially after 32 wines! (maybe more, Wozza's fault)

Looking forward to the next lunch / dinner / wine splurge where I can share some of my $18 faves.

are there photos?

I'm not looking for photos of that  just the wines and AFFers :)

Haha, hopefully the others have some photos. I know there was a photographer taking pics, so fingers crossed the 'official' photos will be great.
I took one (blurry) photo of Koonara Shiraz - so blurry I can't read past the 'Angels' bit - which was a nice wine.

It was lovely to meet you guys! I had a lot of fun (and my colleague looked very happy :D), I always enjoy tasting and discovering Australian wines. I only wish they could market them more than sticking with Yellow Tail and Penfolds for the overseas market. Edit: I discovered SAQ stocks some notable Aussies.

It was refreshing the convos did not revolve around points and mileage, though it caught me off-guard.

AnonymousCoward it seems your inbox is full and I can't send you a PM re the food.

Here you go - snaffled this from the Petaluma stand after drinking what seemed to be about half the bottle as they were packing up:

WP_20160813_small.jpg

Some hightlights were the 1996 Petaluma Coonawarra, the 2008 Parker First Growth, 2002 Majella Cabernet, 2010 Tally Reserve. There were a couple I found quite interesting as well: the recent Wynns Harold release, the Balnaves Chardonnay (chardonnay from Cooonawarra?), the Katnook cellar door blend (don't recall the name), but it has Tannat in it(!!), and a Riadis shiraz that had quite an interesting bouquet. Probably more stuff, will have to think a bit more.

How many AFFers ended up making it? Woz there a Wozza after party?

How many AFFers ended up making it? Woz there a Wozza after party?

Wozza, elYoda, AC, Viridianne, Alzoam, DrSammyLee, plus various partners/friends. Had dinner at China Lane afterwards. Alzoam, Wozza, Viridianne were still kicking on when I left  They will need to relate what happened later in the evening - I had my big bottle to carry home!

I wasn't aware other AFFer were going to be there so didn't bring my camera (reminds me to post photos from the last event). But then again the event was too crowded to take any proper shots.

I did manage to snag a boxed bottle from Parker Coonawarra Estate! :D

Not necessarily wine (sustainable food & wine festival):

Rootstock Sydney
Rootstock Sydney

26-27 November
Carriageworks

---
“Rootstock Sydney’s focus is to promote sustainable farming in food and wine production and no/little additions in winemaking. Rootstock Sydney is a Not For Profit organization and event.

Building upon the enormous success of the past three festivals, Rootstock Sydney 2016 promises to be the most anticipated food and wine festival in the country. This is the only event of its kind – fun, informative, a touch wild, with a focus on organic, biodynamic and natural growing and the beautiful produce that results.

Carriageworks Director Lisa Havilah said: “We’re excited to present the return of Rootstock Sydney at Carriageworks for its third year. This world-class event is an opportunity for visitors to engage first-hand with some of the best chefs and creative leaders in the food and wine industry, from around the country.”

Rootstock Sydney 2016 Schedule
WINE FESTIVAL
Saturday 26th and 27th November – Ticketed – BAY 25
Running over two days, there will be two sessions per day. These ticketed events are an opportunity to both meet the artisans and taste their natural wines. Unlike most other trade fares, the grower-producers are required to attend their stall, which we believe enables more dialogue and understanding of wine. There will be upwards of these 200 of these unique wines available to taste. This year sees an increased focus on natural farming, with wines shown only produced from naturally-farmed vineyards. TICKETS ARE LIVE! Sessions have sold out every festival.

FOOD MARKETS
Saturday 26th and 27th November – Free – Eveleigh Market
The free-to-attend Rootstock Sydney Food Market will return – with a few exciting changes. This year we are collaborating with Carriageworks Farmers Market, with a small presence at the regular Saturday markets, and Sunday’s Rootstock Sydney market will be a special edition of the Carriageworks Farmers Market with a focus on native foods and produce, alongside ethnic-Australian foods from minority groups showcasing their unique foods. FREE TO ATTEND

The markets will include Rootstock Sydney’s infamous orange wine and sake bars, alongside several new bars showcasing varied wine styles and wild ferment beers. FREE TO ATTEND

TALKS
This year sees an exciting series of talks by producers, chefs, educators, writers, sommeliers and more. As in previous years the talks will cover a diverse range of topics around food, wine and agriculture. SESSIONS AND TICKETS TBA.

PARTIES
Both nights over the Rootstock Sydney weekend will feature night parties. Saturday night will feature a group of unique winemakers and showcase their connection to their culture, food and music, while Sunday night will feature the prodigiously talented chefs Duncan Welgemoed, David Moyle & Pasi Petenan with friends Analiese Gregory and Aaron Turner, who will slowly roast Australian produce over / under coals. FREE TO ATTEND!

Both nights are being curated in collaboration with ‘Italo Disco’ founders Maurice Terzini (Icebergs/Dolphin Hotel) and Giovanni Paradiso (Fratelli Paradiso, 10 William St).
