Hi there all.

I have a question that has no simple answer, but I think it is a concept that we must all contemplate.

This site is a mecca for travel enthusiasts. here we get to share myriad concepts and advice and ideas. That is why we love it.

We all like to learn tricks that get us better travel - maybe cheaper, maybe better status points or similar. But somewhere there is a line between taking advantage of system glitches, and actively doing something that is wrong.

Where is the line? For each of us?

Well, the "line" is IMHO, take everything with a grain of salt.

What works for you may not work for others. Some people play the game, some are the game and some don't realise there is a game. But gather information that you know to be true. Don't suppose or assume.

And finally, take a chill pill......;) (I'm sure you know what I mean)

You live and you learn, from bad and from good.

If people want to rort or cheat the system ( as opposed to using the rules to one's advantage). - flying, credit cards, *tax*, whatever, that's their business and concience ( if they have any).

What I despise on AFF are those who come on and boast about it. Morally, socially and ethically that's the pits and if I could dob them in, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

The line is movable....I'm not sure I would go as far as dob them in though....

I'm sure we'll have some come here and stir things up, now that I've put that line down. You can judge them.

For me what is OK is finding out about vouchers for DSC and tricks and tips that are enhancing my travel up the front.

I think it's not OK for some people to brag about rorting a system and some posters that are constantly negative and flare up when questioned (but have very set ideas of their own)

I don’t think it’s up to us to draw the line and take action. If someone doing the wrong thing they will get caught eventually and pay the price.
What I do find annoying is ppl who whinge despite them knowing very well that what they did was wrong, like in the recent QF thread or last year when VA closed accounts of members who abused family transfers for years. To see all the poor innocent (not!) members crying how VA screwed them over... gimme a break!

Agree with that one.

I like Karma. Opportunities arise to correct wrongs when you least expect it. I don’t think we need to draw any lines on AFF.

I figure the airlines have more lawyers and bean counters on the books than we do so as long as its within the rules then good luck to the person that makes the most of it for themselves.

Remember the guy that ended up with about 2mil points for buying multiple packs of pudding and a tax deduction for donating thousands of packets of pudding to shelters?

Cat food Denali. Cat food.

I know this thread is a follow up to an earlier closed for comment thread. Having been on the inside of a few FFP and seen many many scams in my time, I would say the QF store returns borders on a scam that would appear to someone in an office require further investigation.... The account is suspended for 21days.... and if the member provides a decent explanation he moves on.I can see in the future the way points being awarded changed to be outside the return period.

I am all for playing Frequent flyer offers as hard as possible ( be that cat food, puddings, status runs etc) .... but when people take the piss ( with things like family pooling) it makes it harder for the honest members and rules get changed for the worse.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I know quite a number of AFFers who push the envelope to the edge and beyond....they don't come here on AFF to boast or publicise their scheme but to maximise the millions of points they have gained. If the scheme gets shut down, they just move on to the next one and they don't come on to AFF to complain and cough about it. When it comes to points, from what I have seen, there is no morality! A few years ago you could buy new banknotes from the reserve bank at face value and pay wirh a credit card for a small surcharge. I bought 80K of banknotes before it got shutdown....why? Because someone bought several hundred thousand dollars of banknotes and spilled his guts when the ATO came to investigate! Manufactured spending is huge esp in the US and is not too dissimilar to what people were condemning the OP in the recent Qf thread....there are many, many AFFers in to manufactured spending but won't admit it publicly.

The line is novable for different people.

For a lot of people collecting points is a game. They'll push to the limit and brag about it to the point where that particular promotion/loophole gets shutdown. They then move on to the next game.

People who play by the rules are the ones that miss out. I don't hesitate for 1 minute to inform businesses/airlines if I feel some promotion is abused. I will continue to do so. But in my experience they don't care enough to do anything about it until the abuse gets out of control.

Really?
Could you give some examples?

If you’re referring to reporting illegal activities I understand but reporting legal loopholes, even if they are being abused will not help those playing by the rules because those loopholes will be closed faster for everyone.
