AFF Gathering #7 at HBA on 29 November - 1 December

A rough plan of the weekend has been formed, this was done over the FT AGM at the end of February. An interim plan will be released soon, with a goal of getting the full details sorted fairly quickly. We're also going to see about getting some industry rates, as I realise HBA isn't exactly cheap.

So far, the two main organisers, donating their time to the event are penegal & jdevereux3.

However I know JessicaTam, and perhaps others will be itching to help out too. I'll mainly be in the background (QLD).

Additionally, I've booked my flights home, leaving on the Monday morning as there's no way I'll be able to catch a late afternoon flight from HBA to eventually land at OOL that evening unless Qantas were to retime flights. So I have 3 nights.

Thanks for providing the initial momentum samh004. Happy to help where I can.

I recently spent a couple of weeks in Tassie, and took the time to visit Salamanca Market and MONA. They were both worth spending some time at IMHO. Visitors to HBA should allow at least an hour at the market and two hours at the art gallery. To avoid the crowds it is best to get to the gallery well before lunch.

Perhaps these can be factored into AFF #7.

Sorry but I am no longer able to attend :(

+1 to Bill, We will miss you.

PS - was great to see you the other night, even after a few too many drinks

Yes, I think both are great candidates for AFF#7, possibly one after the other using the Ferry to travel from the market to MONA?

I spend quite a bit of time in Hobart, not always knowing well in advance when I will be there though . . . . . as an ignoramus on AFF gatherings (apart from the obvious :p ) is there a particular area on the forum that I should hunt down to explore some of the logisitics/history behind them..???

This forum category (meetings and social events) should have all the threads, and searching for AFF6 through 1 will probably yield a few results too.

I have now booked a room for 3 nights (I'm leaving on the Monday following) at Zero Davey Boutique Apartments Hobart. Got a good deal, mainly from a lot of saving with HotelClub... so I'm sorted, just need to work out a schedule :)

Friday -
Welcome drinks

Saturday -
Salamanca Market
MONA or golf for those inclined
Dinner

Sunday -
Day trip to Port Arthur or Recovery lunch
go home

or Monday -
go home

Pull apart and rebuild as necessary. This is just to get some discussion started.

Hobart is written up in the Qantas inflight magazine this month. Some of the items on their list wouldn't be appropriate for a large group, but may be of interest nevertheless.

The cascade brewery is good fun, for those who enjoy a beer.

Put me down as Gold.

Was looking to do a JASA to MONA to take advantage of the DSC, but AKL is a much better deal and cheaper for me (no accom). Keen to do MONA by boat as part of the festivities.

Having had a discussion with a local, how does this itinerary sound?

Friday
Drinks/meal at Grape/The Squires Bounty at Salamanca

Saturday
Early ferry to MONA*
Lunch at The Source Restaurant at MONA (menu)
Early afternoon ferry back

Free time

Bus pickup at hotels to Cascade for evening brewery tour/tasting
Bus to dinner in CBD/Salamanca area

*May contain pork

Sunday
9-Holes of Golf at Rosny Golf Course or by airport at Royal Tasmania

Closing lunch TBD

Further activities for those staying to Monday TBD

Sounds great Sam though maybe a non-golfing alternative might be an idea.

Edit: maybe scratch my comment, I notice Sunday lunch on the menu. :)

Please see my (in consultation with samh004) suggested itinerary below, while reading this please note that:

- The itinerary is a proposal and may or may not be indicative of the activities that end up being included as part of the final itinerary for the weekend of events, certain venues may need to be changed or moved around or changed depending on their availability etc.

- This suggested itinerary is open to modification through the input of the AFF community, if you know of an activity which you think that the group would enjoy please do not hesitate to throw your idea out there, even more so if you can suggest activities for those time slots which don't currently have anything planned (denoted with TBA).

- Once a final itinerary is confirmed I can start working on putting together a pricing package for the gathering, however, doing so at this stage would be a waste of time as the itinerary is still open to change.

Let me know what you think!

Josh

My apologies to JessicaTam and penegal if I have intruded on anything which you may have already put into motion
