Dont ask for classic award..... Any Seat Award (at classic rates) is what you need to TELL THEM.

Yikes, thanks so much for this. Should have read the fineprint.

So checking a one way flight: a classic award (no earn sC) from MEL-Cairns is 36000 points vs 126,100 points for Any Seat
Certainly a price/point difference: guess is it worth shelling out 250k points (return) just to get me over to platinum...dliemma!

yes - do not book classic award online (zero SC's for classic)!!

You need to find classic J availability and then call and ask for those seats as ASA's booking into U class.
And don't let them charge the assistance points fee,as you can't book this online yourself

No - the points will reduce to classic level, but with a cash co-payment (when you call after finding classic availability as above) - do not book the online Any Seat either...do nothing online (except search!)

Just a quick pointer regarding MEL > CNS on QF mainline, only one flight in each direction per day.

So if you want to explore or have a lounge visit in CNS you will need to go back via SYD or BNE.

On the other hand, if you just want to get the trip 'over & done with' book a return immediately after arriving, all being well you should be able to stay in the same seat too .

Many fellow people here on AFF have done this before on status runs.

But most importantly, make sure your boarding pass is scanned 'on' when you return, so that the system recognises that you have travelled on both legs so that you obtain those all important SC for both legs.

Again, thanks for the advice on booking seats with points and still accruing SC
To summarise what I have read in the first few posts

1. I have to make a telephone booking for ASA at classic rate
2. This will involve a co-payment, but at least not paying the full ASA in points completelyt
3. I need to check online first there is Classic Seat J availability first
4. If available, I call Qantas bookings
5. Ask for this classic J as an ASA, converting it to U class and paying a co-payment
6. I should then get the seat with SC paying a co-payment and classic points.

I wonder why this cant be done online, and is there anyway to get a gauge what this copayment cost will be?

Once again, thank you to all

MEL-BNE-CNS return will cost 72,000 points and about $540. It will net 240 SC in J

If you use more points you will be able to reduce the $ paid.

There is a thread that will answer your questions:
http://www.australianfrequentflyer....essful-asa-bookings-booked-classic-53677.html

There has been a recent booking made MEL to CNS via Sydney looking at the spreadsheet:

Jan 14 J CNS-SYD-MEL-SYD-CNS 72,000 $538.50 240 dacom

240SCs cost 72000 points and $538

Or even better value in my opinion is Melbourne Sydney Alice return for 48,000 points and a co pay of around $380.00 earning 240 Status Credits

Agree, however there have been reports of poor availability, via ADL is a similar costing and may have better availability.

Can I check if my understanding if correct:
If I do an online search with qantas and its showing me for J : classic award availability and standard business (in dollars or in points), then I presume there is availability to do ASA at classic rates by phone?

If you do a search for a classic award seat in Business and its available, calling up will result in it being done as an any seat award at the best possible redemption, where points can be swapped with cash down to the classic award level.

I may be wrong but that Q has been raised about 10,568 times on AFF :D

A lot of electrons had come & gone on that very issue.

Sorry, no positive reply there. Just have to call up (and wish yourself some luck, too).

I would assume that if the planned system upgrade was actually completed, instead of paused as it is now, that would be the time that ASA functionality over the phone would disappear, or potentially even reappear on the website, but as it is now, the website upgrade doesn't show it and the few old systems that do aren't accessible to members.

It was mentioned at the Q Cash lunch that it would never come back online, I am not sure how that events timeline fits into the aborted IT systems refresh timeline.

Hmmm. Let's see. For ~280,000 QFF points you can do a Oneworld award in business.
