Hi all,

I bit the bullet and went to a travel agent today seeking help and they were extremely unhelpful so thought I would do the smarter thing and ask here - should have done that to begin with really!

I am planning (well, hoping) to spend the second half of the year travelling and doing all the things I have always wanted to, but in the past never had the time or money. At this stage, the route looks something like this:

PER-SFO-LON//BRU (or FRA or AMS)-PEK-(pyongyang)-PEK-SIN-NRT//ICN-DEL-CAI//AMM-AUH-GRU-LIM//UIO (Quito)- HEL- ?somewhere in Europe or US - PER

Yes, I know its a rather convoluted journey and mixing continents in an inconvenient order - sadly the only negotiable part is the bit after HEL, the rest is set thanks to the whims of Formula One schedules and my mum deciding she'd like a white christmas in Europe that we should all attend.

The inital PER-SFO-LON part I was thinking of using the Swiss or Lufthansa RTW tickets as I will be joined by a friend for this part. I believe these allow you an Asia stopover on the return from Europe and I was planning to get to either HKG/Japan/PEK and then booking either a LONE3 or Circle Asia from Asia. Obviously the LONE has a limit of stopovers in Asia which would be a problem - maybe LCCs or return flights to SIN and one way to NRT/from ICN using HKG or PEK as a base? Sadly I don't think I have the $$$ for a DONE3.

If using DONE, would have to get a return flight South America-HEL (pricing at about $2000), or if starting on a circle Asia maybe then using a circle atlantic fare to get back to europe....
Alternatively I could just price it out point-to-point.

Any thoughts or advice?

For what its worth, the travel agent lost all my faith when she failed to understand the basic request for a quote for the Swiss/Lufthansa RTW fare for my friend... Kept trying to tell me about *A milage fares, which I am rather well aquainted with having gotten within 16 miles of the 39000 limit last time I used one!
Once that was clearly too complicated I didn't bother asking the rest. Essentially got told that the OneWorld products were all on the internet. Thanks, TA, I am aware of that!

If anyone also has recommendations for a good TA in Perth that would also be appreciated. I am currently in Bunbury but won't be here long. Finally, if anyone can recommend agents for booking LONEx abroad it would be appreciated. I imagine I would have to book over phone/email so that flights are available and then collect in person? I speak Japanese so DONE ex-Japan is ok in that regard.

wow... amazing itin.
which F1 events are you lining up?

looking quickly I can really only see it work on ow as two rtws, particularly given number of asian segments

PER-Asia (wherever cheapest)
RTW1 - 3Cont : Asia-SFO-LON//BRU (or FRA or AMS)-PEK-(pyongyang)-PEK-SIN-NRT-Asia
break could be anywhere
RTW2 3/4 cont: Asia-ICN-DEL-CAI//AMM-AUH-GRU-LIM//UIO (Quito)- HEL- ?somewhere in Europe or US - PER

Booking thru AA in the right countries can all be done by phone and all e-ticketing.

F1 events - essentially everything from Hungary on with the exception of Monza, which is on while the tour that I want to go on to North Korea is on. So: Hungary, Spa, Singapore, Japan, Korea, Delhi, Abu Dhabi, Brazil... And I shouldn't forget Melbourne (JASA/JetFlex SC run for gold...) and Malaysia (AirAsia, which again had the 'best' times so I can go without missing work) - note I would recommend not having any injuries on the Monday after KL race just in case I am your doctor :p

If you ring and ticket through AA, can you book from Australia and start in Japan? Or is there a separate number to ring to try and pretend I am calling from Japan? Argh, so complicated.... Although amusing to see the facial expression on the TA's face when I described. When I'd started by saying I wanted to talk about RTW flights she smiled sweetly and informed me that she was still learning and was able to book me return flights, both domestic AND international. :D Maybe going to a semi-rural TA was a mistake.....

Update: Contacted by TA today (a third one, not the one who was still learning nor the one who told me 'search on the internet') and they had managed to find the Swiss/LH fares. That said, she tried to upsell me by $500-800 and sounded pretty disinterested in any sale when I called her on it. Vague unhelpful information - I asked for routing possibilities and she tried to fob me off - 'it's all in code'. Told her I speak code (Thanks AFF!) and she emailed me the rules. Small victory finally! For the record, this WASN'T FC.

If anyone can recommend a WA TA who is well-versed in RTW booking please let me know. I have faith that there are good ones out there!

What if you did;

RTW #1: PER-xSYD-xLAX-SFO-LON-FRA-PEK-SIN-NRT//ICN-DEL-HKG (park)-PER.

Perhaps from HKG do an eastwards RTW ending in HKG again then picking up #1 and flying home? Not really sure what you can get, as I know very little about RTW tickets and even less about *A ones!

It does sound like an AWESOME trip though. Good luck planning it and have fun flying it!

Thanks, I will look into it. I would prefer to fly OW, but since I am doing the SFO/LON segments with a friend and she wants cheap, I thought the LH/swiss was the easiest/cheapest option.

Oh well, I am on call for the next 50-something hours so will have tonnes of time to explore options!
