I pay for my own infrequent travel LON-MELB-LON & hence end up mostly in economy. I have flown mostly with QF but have recently been seduced by the Emirates on line booking, especially seat selection. Is anyone aware if QF provides such a service?:?:

Yes they do, but you need frequent flyer status (PS+) or a good corporate TA.

You will not be disappointed with Emirates.

Possum, I do have a gripe with a family related to you. They have moved into the 3rd floor of my home and drive me insane every night, especially when they come home in the early mornings after partying all night. Could you tell them to move out to somewhere else.

Even if you are a lowly bronze member of QFF (still free with Woolworths Everday Rewards) you can still phone QF at any time after making your booking and they will make advance economy seat selection.

True, but will have a lot less selection to choose from than Emirates plus with EK can nicely just do it online and see how busy it is around the cabin when choosing

Also seems not to have the QF approach of really restricting which seats a bronze member can select

Emirates also has the benefit out of London of being able to choose either LHR or LGW

It is disappointing that QF doesn't offer seat availability online. It's even more remarkable when you see availability offered on Expedia. Apparently that site offers seat selection (online?) on QF and other airlines after making a booking. Has anyone got experience of this?

I did this when flying BI and got myself a nice exit row seat for the flight :p

You can experience it yourself. Just do a dummy booking and you will see it as a link in the flight options page. You can't select the seat at that point but you can see whats there.

Not sure how mega accurate it is, at that point. But it worked for me with booked flights from AMS to ABR (BA), ABR to MAN (BMI) and MAN to VCE (BA). And then about 20 minutes later, the BA bookings appeared in my QFF bookings page, seats as selected and checked on checkmytrip.

If I did not have status as well then I would love to be able to select any seat in economy.

But while I have status I quite like the QF approach that the once every 3 year not-so-frequent flyer with wife and 2 kids in tow is not sitting in row 40 bulkhead while I am down the back because they booked before me.

Max,
I think you might have the wrong Possum .......

Thanks JohnK,
That is the point. You have the status, I don't. Yet, Emirates allows me the choice of any economy seat.

Does EK really allow anyone to select ANY seat?

Hmmm... While NZ allows seat selection at time of booking I am (not surprisingly!) quite happy that certain seats are not available to "just anyone"...

As a Gold Elite I can pick exit rows... but a base level member of Airpoints (or a non-member) wouldn't have that option...those seats just wouldn't show as available..

How does EK look after its regulars???

Does EK really allow anyone to select ANY seat?

Anyone who is a skywards member can select a seat other than those blocked such as bassinets and exit rows

In economy, those that are not skywards members cannot select a seat

Dave

Thanks... the OP seemed to be saying anyone/any seat....

So they are actually the same as NZ (or any airline that allows advance seat selection.. even if restricted.)
