Hi, I am not a champagne drinker (red wine is my love), but my SIL is, and we want to buy her a bottle for her significant birthday coming up. Between $100-$200.
She drank the G.H Mumm brand in France and quite enjoyed it. Any suggestions?

I recall it as bit austere compared to the mainstream "big name" products.. that might appeal.. or may not...
 
dont laugh, but I had my first Chandom NV the other day, and thought it was fantastic,

any experts care to educate me on how much better moet or dom is compared

I assume you are talking about Chandon NV from Australia? It's a standard sparkling wine. Moët and Dom Perignon are Champagnes so quite different, and yes they are far superior in aroma, taste and complexity. Champagne always has a distinct flavour profile that mostly you will not find in sparkling wines. Remember Champagne is only from the Champagne region. Sparkling wine can be from anywhere. Some sparkling wines are made méthode traditionelle in the same way as Champagne is.

If my recollection of the domain winery tour (chandon winery)
it was started/owned by Moet, and they use the exact same process as Moet, but obviously cant be called champagne,
would it be fair to say they would probably taste quite similar?

Yes Chandon is owned by LVMH Moët. The taste is vastly different. Look for some tasting opportunities in wine stores or festivals.

While personally I do vastly prefer champagne to methode champagnois this is after all ultimately a matter of taste. If for you, you prefer the latter then you will probably save yourself a fair bit of money. Don't let all the snobs deter you, Australia and NZ do produce some very nice sparkling wines so if you like these then run with it.

yes , aus do make some great wines, I like many aussie reds, ive never been a champagne/sparkling person

ive recently acquired a dom perignon and Cristal, and ive never tried them before,

due to brand/price/snob, im expecting and hoping its going to blow me away

am waiting for a occassion to open them
 
New to this wine, champagne, liquor threads. How long can a bottle of champagne be stored? I read that it's best to store it horizontally and stable temperature - would 18-20 degrees be fine?
