Hi currently in Singapore and husband (83) in hospital taken by ambulance this morning, seems like a gall bladder issue.

I just want to make sure I have covered off on everything. Covermore are the insurance company and they have been notified.

Due to fly back tomorrow on jq8 business to Melbourne and have advised Jetstar on line and spoke with Qantas Singapore who were the only ones available.

Have sent message to Qantas on line too. Have sent an interim copy of from hospital drs to say he is still under investigation as we are not able to fly tomorrow night.

I am feeling a bit vulnerable here by myself and hopefully will know more tomorrow. Best case scenario antibiotics will reduce pain and we can fly in a few days, worse is an op here in Singapore.

Qantas Singapore say I have to let them know by 4pm of new travel arrangements, but I may not know by then ?

The one thing in your favour is that the Singapore health system is excellent and in our experience not as expensive as we feared.
As for the fiighs they are out of your control. The medical decisions will determine those. Just keep your insurance company informed.

Agree with drron.

Don’t worry too much about the flights, the insurance company will take care of any new arrangements, and any cancellation or change fees of the old flights will be taken care of as well. Your insurance should also cover any additional hotel nights you need… just ,et the front desk know you might be staying longer… you don’t want to have to change rooms! (unless you want to move closer to the hospital. If you decide to do that have a chat with your insurance company to let them know and get authorisation for costs etc)

Seems that World Travel Protection act on behalf of Covermore, just waiting to hear back from them again as Qantas have advised because we are on the last leg of an award fare if we don’t fly tonight it is forfeited. No other award fares available in the next week in the same class JQ business. I guess it’s then up to Covermore/World travel to assist in getting us home.

Good suggestion @I love to travel
and in writing/email if you can @DontGetMeStarted

Sorry to here of your plight @DontGetMeStarted
Hope things settle for you both and you are home soon.
Thank you, they have just taken him down for surgery, I have advised World Assist / Covermore in writing …..and will also ask them to put I. Writing re flights home though I think recovery will be at least two weeks

I would lodge a claim with Covermore immediately so they can start assessing and determine what is payable or not. Often people think they are covered by a policy and when making a claim the outcome is different.

Check your policy document for award travel, most travel policy will only reimburse you for the cost of the flight you forfeited, not the actual return flight you later on booked.

Again, I would read through your policy document very closely to see what is covered or not, do not assume it is covered unless it is in black and white writing.

There are two parts to this.

While travel insurance may - depending on the policy - cover you for any FF points lost, they will also fly you home following an incident. Two separate parts. You should not be out of pocket by the time you get back to Australia.

I would expect any refund of points lost would only be paid after the cost of the new return flight had been factored in… ie no double dipping. But it would depend on the wording of the policy.

Thx I don’t care about the points, it was our last flight but if they can be claimed then I will wait and see
So far I have provided a lot of stuff but I am not sure what assistance they will give me going forward …perhaps they are waiting to hear from the hospital ? Not sure how anyone not tech savvy and I am minimal cope, but on the positive I am with my husband now who is very groggy and waiting to see dr for results, they had to remove his gall bladder, not much fun when you are 83.

Oh wow! An ordeal for both of you, but glad you are in a safe place and getting the medical care you need!

You’ve done everything right on the insurance front, keeping them informed. I think you are right that they will wait to see how this progresses, then propose a plan to get you home. This will be based on medical clearance to fly. If they don’t pay for the new flights themselves they will at least authorise you to do so, and you’d claim that once you’re back.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they arrange/authorise a proper business class bed for the return flight.

Your hotel will be covered, and depending on your policy, there may also be a cash component per day to cover incidentals for the patient! (poor thing!!)

When I was hospitalised in Bali the hospital called my insurance (ANZ credit card). Once the insurance company knew I was there they were fantastic… calling several times to check my progress, speaking with the doctors, preparing all the claim forms, and sending them to me by email for me to sign when I got back. Although I was able to use the flights I had already booked, so that side I didn’t need to get involved with.

They have lots of experience with this so you’ll be in good hands!

Hope you got some sleep last night @DontGetMeStarted

When it comes time to arrange for your flight home as @MEL_Traveller mentioned a lie flat J bed would be way more comfortable.
Perhaps if not suggested by TI, it might be worth asking (research the flights that you would consider )

I think it would have to be business class for comfort but will see what they suggest, I am pretty good at negotiating or insisting if that washes..we have 4 bags that would need to be checked too but think we are a week or so away from that plan …I can arrange wheelchair assistance at Singapore I am sure
