I think Google need a spell checker. Spot the problem

Ads by Google Quantas Frequent Flyer Miles Boeing 747 A330

Just a simple typing mistake.

When you type in "Quantas" in google's search engine it shows

Did you mean: qantas

before listing all the search matches.

But aren't the ads based on the contents of the page? Got to the 747-300 to Perth thread which is one of the spots this comes up. Quantas is not mentioned anywhere on the page, but the ad link comes up!

I haven't noticed anything but I am probably looking in the wrong spot.

Are the ads random sometimes or do they always refer to something in the content of the thread?

Not an uncommon mistake, although I don't think a spell check would help. I feel that QANTAS should be written in upper case, seeing that it is an acronym. I wonder how the style manuals regard this?

I started as an Acronym, but is now a registered trade mark and as such the owner can define how it is to be presented (upper and lower case). And Qantas Airways has decided it can be used either as all capitals (as they do on the side of the aircraft and when used in conjunction with the red triangle and roo image like this

), or as a Capitalised first letter as they do in most of their marketing material or as seen in the definitions sections of Qantas Frequent Flyer program ('Qantas' means Qantas Airways Limited ABN 16 009 661 901").

Fair enough, NM. I suppose if you own the trade mark, then you can use it any way you like, within the law. Qantas always looks strange with a "u" in it:!:

As I often tell my American colleagues - the only U is Qantas should be You!

Not uncommon, but it is one that should be coming out of Google's Ad Server? Given that QUANTAS wasn't anywhere in the content of the page, thought it strange that google should include it in their ads.

I have been there a few times now and still no Quantas anywhere in sight.

The google ads must be random and the spelling Quantas used is a really bad typing error by Google. And google is obviously American and Qantas is Australian so they wouldn't give 2 hoots whether they spell it right or not. The last few I have seen were

Frequent Flyer Club Flyer DL Flyers Flyer Templates
Frequent Flyer Club Flyer Flyer Design Free Flyer
Frequent Flyer DL Flyer Club Flyers Flyer Templates

Not sure what some of these have to do with the 747-300 topic but just the same they are there.

The spelling in an ad title is not done by Google or any of their staff. It is entered by the person who purchases and creates the ad.

Pretty sure the ads get IP info. I have never seen a Qantas (or Quantas) ad on AFF, but I do get ads for NZ sites (which I'd guess australian-based readers do not get).

I noticed the "ads by google" doesnt refer to google adsense, which I think is the one that works off context.

Before now I didnt think there was any difference, but it does seem like there is more than one way Google do there ads.

I believe Qantas is spelt incorrectly deliberately. It is not a spelling mistake.

The reason is that Qantas has probably contacted Google and told them not to let advertisers use "Qantas" (a trademark term) in their ads.

As such if an advertiser tries to enter an ad with Qantas in the ad, Google Adwords will not allow it. So instead, the advertiser uses a word as similar as possible to Qantas.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

Might explain the Cathy Pacific airline I have seen as well.

I got Quantas again today
