From The Australian:

FLIGHTS will land at Adelaide Airport at 5am from April in a decision which has angered western suburb residents but received praise from officials who say it will boost tourism.

This will help facilitate direct HKG-ADL flights, but I don't expect it to be very popular.

Undoing some curfew hours in Adelaide now that planes are quieter does make sense for business and tourism dollars.
The next one should be Sydney where adding an hour on in the morning and evening would improve the traffic flow.

Oh my Lordy. So much whinging going on right now in Adelaide. The airport being there well before most people purchased their homes.

I have a CX direct flight for April due to arrive around 10.30am. Departure time of midnight from HK suits me perfectly. Hope that doesn't change. :(

I expect it will as the point of the curfew change/exemption was to be able to land at 0510, which would imply a 1900ish departure from HKG. Four times a week as per the article.

I just checked the actual date and it commences on the 6th. I'm flying on the 4th. Phew. I think it's only for those flights that were connecting through Melbourne.

The CX aircraft is one of the noisier aircraft but not much. The EK flight is surprisingly noisy. But it's the high pitch whine of JQ/TT engines that really get me.

Considering cargo jets have no curfew I can't see the problem.

Great news - think the whinging will outdo the aircraft noise ;) . . . . . ADL *really* needs to join the 21st century (and I'm ADL born & bred!!!); I get a heap of flights over my house in BKK - it's not that bad, the thunderstorms wake me more often than a plane on final approach!!!

It will only an "issue" for 6 months of year anyway, but as has been posted, people move to the airport, the airport doesn't move to them. *Home owners in Melbourne's outer suburb Point Cook have an agreement within their ownership that makes them acknowledge RAAF Williams (Point cook) is there and that they can not complain about the noise or future noise levels of the aerodrome.

* - indicates at my last recollection it was in the final approval levels and that was a few years ago.

I would really love to know how a 7:00pm departure ex-HKG with a 05:10am arrival in ADL be great for tourism.

What is wrong with an 8:00pm departure ex-HKG with a 06:10am arrival in ADL?

I think its more to do with onward connections to China as the departing flight can now depart earlier and thus arrive earlier into HKG and connect directly into onward flights.

Wonder if JQ might look at the feasability of a PER-ADL red-eye

For a less than 3 hour flight? Leaving midnight arriving 05:30 (under daylight savings only)

It would allow for connections eastwards, but anyone who values sleep would AVOID it.

Happy wandering

Yes it would only be feasible during summer really.

Just a thought as they will shortly be establishing/expanding their base at ADL and crews could do a straight turn, no overnight required.

The curfew isn't changing. It currently allows for 8 ( I think ) flights in the hour before and after the start and end if the airline applies for it and this is what Cathay did.

The best article I found was about one councillor wanting to change the rules when they heard of this application to which the mayor said something along the lines of “well the current rules let people do this so we can’t really complain or it makes mockery of even having them” .

Perhaps all houses in flight paths where the noise is over a certain level need to start signing contracts when the house is sold and once 80% of houses in these areas have these contracts in place curfews can be relaxed.

Chinese tourists are now going to arrive in ADL in droves because they can depart ~1 hour earlier when they are returning home?

No JohnK. They are "supposed" to come because when they fly home their flight from Adelaide will now connect directly with the onward flight departing Hong Kong rather than wait for the next day. It's not the departure time that's so relevant but the arrival time into HK and onwards. That's the theory anyway.

I bet they are looking forward to March 1/2!

Could make it easier for me to take CX in future, as the current arrival time from ADL (return) would always mean an overnight in HKG, as I would miss the connection to BKK. Will keep my eye on this - I'm *really* over the bus ride in SYD to catch my connection. . . .
