Accomodation for Cancelled Qantas Link Flights due to Weather

Surely, the additional fuel burn, accomodation and other incidental costs incurred by flying back to ADL, outweigh the difference in fines between ADL and SYD? (At least I would have thought...)

We’re not talking about a measly traffic fine here - max fine for breaking Sydney curfew is $850,000.

That’d buy you about 50 flights between ADL & SYD.

The fine for Adelaide is $170,000. Plus, they’d probably get a dispensation based on them returning to Adelaide unexpectedly (ie, they didn’t wilful plan to break curfew at Adelaide).

Landing at ADL after curfew in a non-normal (ie diversion) isn't a big deal. Can't take off again though.

There seems to be no consistency with accom provisions. Virgin left me high and dry in Bali during the volcano, Qantas also abandoned me after a mechanical cancelation (I had to pay myself to fly on Virgin - was QF WP). Seems it can just depend on who you deal with.

Not on Qantas but a few years ago I was due to fly OOL-SYD-MEL on VA and bad weather in SYD caused many disruptions. I was put on the direct OOL-MEL flight the next day and given accommodation for the night including taxi and meal voucher at Twin waters RSL.

No transport the next day as had been promised.

... Virgin left me high and dry in Bali during the volcano ....

This is where your travel insurance should help. In my case, being stranded in Seattle for 2 days due to the Icelandic volcano eruption, the insurer reimbursed 2 nights accomodation, meals and extended car rental.

Only two weeks ago on board JQ38 SYD-DPS the plane returned back to Sydney due to volcanic activity in Bali. I can’t praise Jetstar enough on how they helped. As we initially flew out of Melb, they put my family of 5 up for the night, this included a $30.00 voucher each for breakfast. Transportation to and from the airport was also catered for. Jetstar arranged flights back to Melb the next morning, and then flights the day after to Bali via Adelaide. We received countless vouches to spend upon our arrival back into Sydney on the Thursday night and again on the Friday morning as we flew back to Melbourne. As our holiday was delayed by 2 days they also allowed us to return back to Melb 2 days later at no extra charge.

The initial booking was made through Qantas on points, yet Jetstar appeared more willing to help. Domestically I always fly QF. My option of Jetstar has definitely changed for the better.

Unfortunately not. One policy didn’t cover the volcano, the other just called it a “travel inconvenience” which capped it at $500 total.

Just saw this in the customer charter. It's pretty clear cut.

In the unlikely event that your flight is delayed overnight for reasons within our control and you are away from your home port, we will provide you with meals, accommodation and transfers.

If your travel with Qantas is disrupted for reasons that are outside our control and you are away from your home port, we will provide overnight accommodation.
.

So there you have it - get a print out of that next time your flight is cancelled due weather.

I was delayed in SYD with Jetstar 2 years ago and they wanted to bump me to a 6.15 am the next day and put me into Avalon not Tullamarine (where my car was) and shuttle me out to homebush for my accom which they would pay for. I was on a day run so had no toiletries, change of undegarments or clothes not eben phone charger.
I got my money back after some wrangeling and brought a VA flight for 3.5 hours later and sat in the VA lounge and had a cold beer and was home at around 11.30pm. It cost me (well my boss) an extra $120 but being a Friday I just wanted to get home. The strange thing is that VA apologised for me having been inconvenienced while JQ just said that it was beyond their control.

Qantas cancelled 2 flights SYD-BNE last Friday night. I'm not sure if Virgin cancelled any flights but both JQ and TT cancelled their last flight of the evening. I'm not sure what happens in that situation but that's a huge inconvenience.
