So according to the Jetstar website, QP and QFF members don't get free access to the lounge.

However I called up last week to purchase accesss, the lady on the phone remarked that I was a QFF member (I'm PS and have QP membership) , went away for a few minutes and then came back and added the lounge access to the booking.
Phone call was about to end and I asked "What about paying?".
She said it's free for you because you're a QFF member.

Bonus!
Is this the norm? was I lucky? Or are JetStar feeling guilty and giving back a little to QF?

On a side note, glad it was free. It's not a great lounge and we only had all of 5 minutes in there.

Definitely not the norm. Only QF Platinum meant to get free access.
Unless its a reaction to DJ opening.

This. WP and CL only are allowed complimentary access. There is a sign at the counter stating that specifically. I was there a month ago.

I’m a Platinum now, and still haven’t had my free access as I only fly North, not South, but I’d rather QF opened it up to QP and above, instead of what it is currently. Makes far more sense to be loyal to your customers than make them pay even more…

I was a "guest" there last week (that is what I was called by the Vinegar breasted nasty person working the front counter) and everything was a hastle - no food, wireless down, incorrect wireless pass code and the list went on.

I have met in my profession morgue attendants that had more personality and were more welcoming to their "guests"
Perhaps the leprecaun D-warf can cross hire some Asian cabin crew to train the Aussie counter jumpers what it means to value clients/customers

OOL is in my opinion a major destination in Aust so whilst I understand why QF don't fly there they should make the lounge available to QP members who are loyal enough to fly JetStar.

Would be staff training at the call centre.

Is that the then out sourced call centre as well? I am am the wishful thinking stage of when QF will ever keep their 'ear to the ground" & listen to the feedback & trends of the ever changing & evolving modern age? Get the AJ & his 'lackys" out of that '39th" floor office & listen for a change about a customer or prospective customers views & expectations of your few lacklustre monopolised & several remaining antiquated products.. The way I was educated in business school.. Is simply..when a product or brand commences discounting. (in view of the current products) Its lifespan has been diminished.. & on the way out.. Is that the way of the QF brand & products? Please someone flick this off to that ignorant, self believing & funding - old styllised management level of QF..before more boredom sets in again..
Rant over

If Qantas can generate loyalty from customers without even offering a Qantas aircraft for them to fly on, why would they bother spending money on a lounge?

How can you say J* pax are loyal?

Most of the pax that use J* use them because they're "cheap" and happily move from airline to airline (Tiger, etc) depending on who offers the cheapest fare on that day/route even if its only $5 cheaper, loyalty is when someone is willing to still buy a service from you even if you're $5, $20, $50 more expensive then your competitor, and do it because of your brand, service and benefits.

I usually fly QF most places, but in OOL between Tiger, J* and DJ I would fly DJ.

*Disclaimer: By saying that I don't mean we shouldn't shop around for better deals, or if we don't use QF/DJ all the time we aren't considered loyal, I am just trying to make the point really with J* there is not much to be loyal to and their general demographic are infrequent leisure flyers who will pick their airline based solely on price.

with the Qantas lounge access where available and QFF points and status credits there is a degree of loyalty involved when choosing JQ over DJ.

There is a small degree, but you raise an interesting point while also hitting the nail on the head for another.

First, while there's a small degree of loyalty, it all but vanishes for repeat flyers when they find out they get no priority checkin, even as a Platinum (I believe CL do... but show me a CL who regularly travels them domestic), they get no free seat selection, and are treated pretty badly/not recognised for being the flyers that generally spend a lot more with an airline. Doesn't make you want to be loyal...

Second, if JQ can offer lounge access to QP's (and presumably not pay for it because big brother is very nice with them), why can't they offer JQ lounge access to all levels that would get it from the QP? They do it for one, why not the other?

And this is the exact reason, I will work very hard to maintain my DJ Plat status as WP on JQ is worth b*gger all, unfortunately I don't think the bean counters at QF understand this ;)

Perhaps it is a change in policy to counter Virgin's new lounge at OOL and the change hasn't been publicised yet.

You’d hope they’d address more than just that… I do wonder how the numbers (not profit so much as numbers flying) would change if they recognised status on some basic level and trained their staff not to act as badly :p

As a SFSC, I am fairly "loyal" to JQ because I get QP access when I travel with them, and in general, they are cheaper than DJ (even if you include the Plus bundle) but naturally more expensive than TT.

But I agree with you that for the average punter, price is almost always the key factor in deciding who they fly with.
