AA vs QF DONE4 fees/taxes/surcharges

26000 Zlotys for a DONE 4 - about AUD10300. Not really worth the hassle.

I think the currencies have been equalised around the world to stop the AFFs from going to Indonesia, PHillipines etc etc

South Africa and Bangladesh still come out looking okay though. Shame the cost of positioning flights is so high to SA and only one OW carrier with greatly limited D availability flies into DAC.

$340 is a decent amount of cash to save imo for something that I don't even find inconveniant. I find that the ATW desk is normally v good at sorting out ATW tickets

Dave

Fair enough. I thought you would see it exactly that way, hence the quotation marks around inconvenience.

From my perspective, ringing the ATW desk is inconvenient, when the alternative is to simply e-mail my itinerary to a TA, and they ticket it via QF.

Maybe I've lost sight of the value of a dollar somewhere, but each to their own.

To me , that's a significant amount to pay to have a TA do a few minutes work. Of course, if really wanting to use a TA, just make the 1st sector on AA and then get it issued on AA from TA

Takes me about 20 mins to get itinerary sorted out with AA normally and $1000 an hour seems expensive to me. If there are 2 tickets then $2000 an hour is uber pricey

Ah but you are not taking into account us Type A personalities who have to have everything booked at least 9 months out.If I book with AA i have to pay up straight away.If I do it via TA I pay ~ 1 month out.
As I still work on an overdraft if I delay a $10000 bill by 6 months i save $350 interest so $340 extra to save $350 interest is worth it especially as I get rewards points on the $340 but not the $350.So for me still definitely worth having a TA-after all we are all different.

I agree with using my TA - she lets me ticket at the last possible minute. This allows me to jump credit card cutoffs etc etc.

In the scheme of things for an $11000 ticket, $400 is not alot.

The other benefit of an 081 ticket number is that it allows you to request QF points upgrades on line. 001 tickets need to a phone call to QF which is just an extra hurdle.

THe other benefit of using a TA is that when I need to cancel a DONE4, which I've done, she will arrange for QF to refund which comes through on the credit card a few weeks later minus the cancellation charge.

I have heard enough nightmare stories on here about cancelling an AA ticket and getting your money back.

I saved approx $400 in taxes on a DONE5 i booked in Nov 09 by ticketing through AA, it was booked online so no hassles.

Another benefit of AA, is they do not charge a service to make changes. I hear QF will charge a service fee. I call AA RTW desk today to make a change to make use of Mexicana no beng part of oneworld, very quick & efficient!

This is not true; I have upgraded on QF flight and metal from 001- tickets several times.

Currently I have four such upgrade requests in the system (all on AA ticketed LONE4's).

In fact QF is one of the easier upgrades to request. Have a booking on a QF flight number on QF metal in an upgradeable class and wish to upgrade? Simple; pull up the booking on line and provide a QFF number and PIN to register the upgrade request.

On the 2 occasions I have had a 001 ticket number but still QF flight on QF metal, it has not worked on line and I have had to phone QF which was not a problem.

Note this was my personal experience with 2 tickets so a bit limited.

I will have some exposure later this month to a Lufthansa ticketed QF on QF flight so I will see whether that upgrade works automatically or needs a phone call to QF.

The LH ticket (number commencing 220) issued today. The QF flights are able to be upgraded automatically via the online system and do not need a phone call to Qantas.
