Hi all

I just booked for my folks current trip via AA.com for $1,738USD

KUL to LON (Malaysian air) transit only
LON to FCO (BA) then make own way to LIS 5 days later
LIS to CLT (US Airways) then make own way to NYC 6 days later
JFK - LON (BA) Transit only
LON to KUL (Malaysian air)

All ticketed on AA

Now trying to figure out checked in luggage. At time of booking three separate AA sales people via call center told me I would get 2 x bags 23KG a bag for entire trip.

However now online reservation shows,
no info about baggage for KUL to FCO
2 x bag at 23kg each for LIS to CLT
1 x bag at 23kg for JFK to KUL + $100 for an extra bag

So does this mean I dont get 2 x bags at 23kg each for entire ticket?

Also in the e-ticket they emailed me it says:

Baggage Information

Baggage charges for your itinerary will be governed by US Airways BAG ALLOWANCE -LISCLT-02 Pieces/ US Airways /UP TO 50 LB/23 KG AND UP TO 62 LINEAR IN/158 LINEAR CM BAG ALLOWANCE -JFKKUL-01 Piece/BA/UP TO 51 LB/23 KG AND UP TO 81 LINEAR IN/208 LINEAR CM 1STCHECKED BAG FEE-LISCLT-USD0.00/ US Airways /UP TO 50 LB/23 KG AND UP TO 62 LINEAR IN/158 LINEAR CM 1STCHECKED BAG FEE-JFKKUL-USD0.00/BA/UP TO 51 LB/23 KG AND UP TO 81 LINEAR IN/208 LINEAR CM 2NDCHECKED BAG FEE-LISCLT-USD0.00/ US Airways /UP TO 50 LB/23 KG AND UP TO 62 LINEAR IN/158 LINEAR CM 2NDCHECKED BAG FEE-JFKKUL-USD100.00/BA/UP TO 51 LB/23 KG AND UP TO 81 LINEAR IN/208 LINEAR CM ADDITIONAL ALLOWANCES AND/OR DISCOUNTS MAY APPLY

What does this mean:
Baggage charges for your itinerary will be governed by US Airways BAG ALLOWANCE -LISCLT-02 Pieces

I called AA USA and AA Malaysia but they useless, they keep telling me its 1 bag at 23KG only and they cant see the emailed e-ticket info where is says my baggage charge is governed by US Airways, and also even if they could see it they say they dont know what that means.

But also online reservation details in baggage section says this:
Most Significant Carrier

Based on your travel, one airline is designated as the Most Significant Carrier, and that airline's baggage allowances and charges apply to your entire journey.
Interested in learning more?

So now who is the most significant carrier, is it US Airways and if it is why cant AA call centre tell me that, instead they tell me its 1 x bag 23KG as per their screen.

Any help be appreciated

EDIT: Also as a side note, I booked for myself via BA
AUH - FCO (via LON)
LIS - CLT
JFK - AUH (via LON)

I have same story, only 1 x bag at 23kg for entire trip and online manage reservation gives me option of buying more bags, except for LIS - CLT.
I thought if traveling to USA I would get 2 x bags 23kg each for entire trip.

What is the flight number KUL-LON?

I presume the routing listed is all on the one PNR?

I'd call up AA & ask them to retrieve your eticket & ask if all sectors have "2PC" against each flight segment.

The allowances on itineraries sometimes only show the baggage allowance as if it was booked as a stand alone flight ie not recognise the piece system if your journey involves North or South America.

first flight is American Airlines 7435

Yup, its all on one PNR with one record locator

ok so if their system is showing them as stand alone flight , then is that an error on their system?

what are the actual rules....are you not always allowed the max baggage based on entire routing?

With the USA DOT exception to IATA 302 the baggage allowance you get for the first "journey" is the allowance you should get for the entire trip. Also with the exeception the allowance is based on the Marketing carrier (ie. the two letters being part of the flight number).

It is not necessarily the 'highest' allowance one might otherwise have received.

In this case the baggage allowance should be AA's for the KUL-LHR segment.

However, it looks like AA haven't filed an allowance for KUL-LON or LON-FCO and perhaps the US allowance for is the first valid one found.

In any case the allowance used must be the same for the entire journey.

It is strange this is not the case on your e-ticket.I guess that where the AAgents are coming from.

ok so if my folks E-Ticket Confirmation email sent to them says that "Baggage charges for your itinerary will be governed by US Airways BAG ALLOWANCE "....then they should be safe with taking 2 x bags at 23kg each for entire journey?

But there is no way of getting this confirmed by AAgents cause they cant see that email sent.

So I guess the check-in counter people will also say the same thing, the system says 1 x bag but the email says something else.

However as an additional issue, what about their flight from JFK - KUL via LON, first flight with BA....
should they not get 2 x bags at 23kg, AA online reservation page shows 1 x bag at 23kg and option to purchase anther bag at $100.

According to BA website Checked baggage allowance | Baggage essentials | British Airways
it says the following, therefore if BA is allowing 2 x bags from JFK - LON then why isnt AA allowing the 2 x bags from JFK - KUL via LON?

Connecting between India and USA/Bermuda/Canada2 bags
max 23kg (51lb) each

....Very confusing and their agents not very helpful.

Can you call any of the other airlines involved & ask them to view the eticket & tell you what they can see in the baggage allowance column which is usually to the right of the box displaying fare basis code?

ok but dont I need to give other airlines a record locator, the one I have been given is for AA?

Assuming:

1. You are ticketed on BA2361 for LIS-CLT
2. It is all on one PNR

The correct allowance, as you stated, is 1 piece at 23kg (BA policy). Travel to the US does not automatically mean 2 pieces. For example UA only allows 1 piece on SYD-LAX-SYD itineraries.

KUL to LON (Malaysian air) transit only
LON to FCO (BA) then make own way to LIS 5 days later
LIS to CLT (US Airways) then make own way to NYC 6 days later
JFK - LON (BA) Transit only
LON to KUL (Malaysian air)

All ticketed on AA

Quoting this itinerary up in Amadeus gives 1 piece at 23kg and $100 USD for any additional pieces. From your posts, this is consistent with what the AA res agents have told you.

See American Airlines Baggage Allowance Information On aa.com "TRAVEL TO/THROUGH/FROM EUROPE"

US Airways for that matter has not offered 2 pieces in Y for transatlantic for a long time (if ever) so that is outright incorrect in the first place.

On a side note, the AA emails often contradict what viewing your res online on the AA website shows for your baggage allowance. I've had emails tell me before I'm subject to bag fees beyond the 1st piece, when the site said I had 2 free pieces. The site tends to be correct more often. Once in a while the email is correct but not the site. So in your case, what does the site display?

All is ticketed on AA code shares and online for baggage section it doesn't show the KUL - LON - FCO.

All the baggage info online starts with is LIS - CLT and states 2 bags 23kg each

Then it shows the flight from NYC - LON - KUL and states 1 bag 23kg but $100 for an extra bag.

AAgents call centre been no good. Two have told me KUL - FCO will be 1 bag but another agent has told me 2 bags. My online reservation page is silent about it.......so don't know what to do?

But also if online they saying they givining 2 bags going to USA then why not give me same when leaving USA on the same ticket......why allow me to bring two bags and not allow me to leave with two bags?

Ring AA and ask for the BA record locator then check on checkmytrip.com and tell us what checkmytrip.com shows.
