Some fellow students and I are planning a trip to Hawaii in August (ex pdx). I've looked up AA eco fares to HNL and was surprised that they're about $3-400 higher than most carriers.

AA has daily flights to Honolulu, Maui, Kona and Kauai. Based on your experience:
- Which of those destinations have traditionally been the cheapest to fly to?
- Are prices to HNL or other destinations going to go decrease?
- Where are we going to have the best time? :)

edit: should probably move this one to "cheap international airfares"?

Peak time in Hawaii is June-August (end of academic year holidays in the US) and the two or three weeks immediately after Christmas.

You want to go in August; can't see any likelihood the fares dropping for that period. In fact, they will go up as you get closer to the date!

Certainly check out the other carriers, but if you want oneworld, then AA is your only choice from the mainland.

As for which island - you certainly should spend some time on Oahu (Waikiki), but be aware it will be very busy - lots of partying! So you might do that, and then go to one of the other islands for a rest break. The big island is more laid back, as is Kauai. Maui is more laid back than Waikiki, but will also be quite busy in August. Also consider staying in a second location on Oahu, somewhere up on the north shore (Waimea, Sunset Beach, etc.). Aloha!
