I’m booking a trip to Canada for a conference and want to stopover a few nights in New York City before heading home. QF have great sale pricing in J that suits my plans, with one catch -connection time between JFK - DFW and DFW - SYD flights. End destination is CBR.

Option 1 Dep JFK 17.28 arrive DFW 2028, connect to QF 8 at 2130 All in J.
Option 2 Depart LGA 1400 arrive DFW 16.58, connect to QF22 at 19.15. But the flight LGA to DFW is in economy and costs more.

I can see that there are other AA flights from LGA to DFW but they are not available to book via QF.

Such a tight connection does seem like madness. But if this is the “recommended” itinerary QF & AA offer, can I assume that they will manage any issues and I’ll be OK?
0r if I book the Option 2 is there any way to upgrade the AA flight to J?

if on one ticket, then yes, you'll be accommodated on the next available service. Available being the operative word. Can you tolerate a day (or two) delay, for instance?

Personally, with an hour's connection, I would expect to miss the connection, but that may not matter too much, for a return home. Boarding will probably start not long after the time you land, and probably close 30 mins later (I'm out of recent touch, so stand to be corrected).

Good point, I I really couldn’t wait 24 hours to get home. So perhaps the real question is “is there any way to upgrade the AA flight to J” or perhaps is there economy plus or something similar I can book as a WP?

Just another thought. If the flight is for later in the year, it is highly likely that American Airlines will change the flight in some way. If this is the case, you should be offered a number of different options (at no charge), which may give you more time for the transit. MCT is 1 hour, so even a 5 minute change will put this below MCT, forcing Qantas to put you on an earlier flight out of JFK.

Very good point. Highly likely if more than 6 mths out!

Might even get DIY change options to QF4 or other decent options.

That’s a very interesting thought. Flight is late October and I think the odds of a flight change would be better than the odds of making the connection as booked .
I’ve had this happen on domestic J Award bookings - QF change a flight > 20 minutes and I’ve been able to rebook any available J seat same day. The difference here would be the flight is on a partner airline so may not get the same outcome?

It should still work the same.

2 yrs ago, I had YUL-ORD-LAX-SYD (booked that for extra SCs!). First two on AA (with QF codes) and then QF. AA cancelled YUL-ORD entirely a few months out but we were able to change online to YUL-DFW-SYD. Which was obviously quicker and less hassle with connections AND got ORCs.

Good to keep these in mind:

Schedule Change - Other Airline Flights on a Qantas ticket

American Airlines - Schedule Change

Those flights are hugely padded. Looking at flight aware the actual flying time is around 3 hours, and the flight is blocked at 4?

On the days it departs JFK on time it can be arriving almost an hour early. Then there are the days it’s leaving horrendously late :(

There’s no guarantees your LGA flight with a two hour buffer is going to make the connection any more than thr 1 hour.

Weather can affect all parts of the system… T-storms in the south, snow in the north. You never know.

I'd book this ticket with 62 minute D to I connection.

JFK-DFW popular (and frequent enough), likely to land in international terminal. Could always try to get on earlier flight in JFK.

You can get any gate to any gate at DFW using AirtrAAin no longer than ~25 minutes including walking and wait time if you're hustling.
