I’m booking a trip to Canada for a conference and want to stopover a few nights in New York City before heading home. QF have great sale pricing in J that suits my plans, with one catch -connection time between JFK - DFW and DFW - SYD flights. End destination is CBR.

Option 1 Dep JFK 17.28 arrive DFW 2028, connect to QF 8 at 2130 All in J.
Option 2 Depart LGA 1400 arrive DFW 16.58, connect to QF22 at 19.15. But the flight LGA to DFW is in economy and costs more.

I can see that there are other AA flights from LGA to DFW but they are not available to book via QF.

Such a tight connection does seem like madness. But if this is the “recommended” itinerary QF & AA offer, can I assume that they will manage any issues and I’ll be OK?
0r if I book the Option 2 is there any way to upgrade the AA flight to J?

if on one ticket, then yes, you'll be accommodated on the next available service. Available being the operative word. Can you tolerate a day (or two) delay, for instance?

Personally, with an hour's connection, I would expect to miss the connection, but that may not matter too much, for a return home. Boarding will probably start not long after the time you land, and probably close 30 mins later (I'm out of recent touch, so stand to be corrected).

Good point, I I really couldn’t wait 24 hours to get home. So perhaps the real question is “is there any way to upgrade the AA flight to J” or perhaps is there economy plus or something similar I can book as a WP?

Just another thought. If the flight is for later in the year, it is highly likely that American Airlines will change the flight in some way. If this is the case, you should be offered a number of different options (at no charge), which may give you more time for the transit. MCT is 1 hour, so even a 5 minute change will put this below MCT, forcing Qantas to put you on an earlier flight out of JFK.

Very good point. Highly likely if more than 6 mths out!

Might even get DIY change options to QF4 or other decent options.
