On my booked and paid for AA flights I have always had standby as an option due to status with QFF. (OW sapphire or above / QF Gold or above). Does this also follow as truth if I rock up for a QF redemption flight on AA at LGA and try to get standby as I would like to leave b4 the fri arvo rush (i.e. is it also okay for non paid tix)

TO answer my own question, I turned up at LGA midday for my 9pm flight on my T booking (award with QF on AA) and could standby and book any flight for the day even though no award classes were available on those flights with AA on expert flyer for my given route. Thanks AA......I found this very impressive

Is there a real reason for doing standby rather than just booking a flight that really suits you? Typically we just book and fly on points out of NYC on AA in First or J using the QF booking engine and the idea of spending hours at an airport would not fly with my partner. She does not want to waste hours no matter how nice the lounge is and getting back to Los Angeles would be her immediate goal.

No...not at all...when I booked it, this suited me....only the last few days did things change. I couldnt change it for nor book an alternative that wasn't anything more than an hour different. So I took the risk and was impressed...obviously it is a risk but expert flyer showed non full flights earlier in the day and it was the combination of this tool and Knowing standby was a possibility that drove me To do this. I would never pay for J / F on points with AA anyway...a waste in my opinion.
