Re: Nancy-Bird Walton

Mate mate mate. No need for all that. QF use Selly's no nails and expanding foam spray. Cures everything.

I used that once to hold on the new front end of my car after someone decided to drive into me in a car park.

Re: Nancy-Bird Walton

Do you need engineering certification to use Selly's no nails on that Bird??

Not a certificate as such. QF send all their technicians on a a DIY course at Bunnings on a Sunday morning. They learn about bonding Carbon Fibre with Aluminium while enjoin a sausage sizzle, all sponsored by Sellys.

And judging by some of the photos I have seen on here recently of QF birds thats not too far from there truth. ;)

Re: Nancy-Bird Walton

On reflection the repair is something that has not been done before on an A380 so it poses massive issues to get it fixed. It must be a huge task.

And VA can't afford the sausage sizzle part of the day so they make their engineers bring a cut lunch :p

No malice intended, I ask this as a legitimate question: what is your problem with VA? I obviously prefer to fly with Virgin but I don't take every opportunity to run down the other airline on public forums.

I look at it this way, we are lucky to have two decent airlines in Australia and who you choose is a matter of choice and there really is no need to constantly belittle the other. It is childish and really does not contribute to positive forum discussion.

In doing so you are behaving in a manner not dissimilar to the 'fanbois' you despise so much.

Folks, let stick to the topic of the repair and return to service of the QF A380, and keep the QF vs VA discussion for other threads.

OK - back OT. The most important thing I learnt at a Bunnings DIY session is that Nothing screams 'poor workmanship' more than wrinkles in the duct tape

Re: Nancy-Bird Walton

My QF contact tells me that they have decided to refit with a 3 class layout - J, PE and Y so the return will be a bit delayed.

I'd say your contact has some wrong information.

The first 12 (including Nancy once she is back) will be reconfigured.

As andymoo mentioned they will be reconfigured 14F/64J/35W/371Y. VH-OQD will be the first aircraft to get the work done and will enter service about May.

Here here.... banish them back to the VA soap opera forum ;)

I am most interested to hear all the details about the A380 repair..... I wonder if they'll do an Air Crash investigation show?? Even though I know thats a washed down version of events....

There has been quite a lot reported on the events of QF32, and it's all pretty well known and documented now. I would like to see a documentary such as "world's greatest fixes" or whatever the program is called, detailing how the repair was done.

We joke about gaffer tape and staples, but the logistics of this repair must be huge. It would be interesting to understand all the options that were considered and why the final process was selected. In terms of difficulty, technology and cost, this must be one of the biggest repair jobs of all time.

Perhaps they got inspiration from here:

I agree! I think it would be amazing!

New A380 issues - cracks found in Nancy Bird walton's wing ribs

While repairing the A380 in Singapore they have founds unexpected cracks in the wing ribs:

THE discovery of tiny cracks in one of the wings of a Qantas A380 under extensive repair in Singapore has led to the detection of similar problems in four other Airbus superjumbos worldwide.
The cracks - less than a centimetre long - in the wing ribs of the A380s do not pose an immediate threat to the safety of the aircraft. The ribs are vertical fixtures that stabilise the wings.

A380 Cracks in wings

Lets see how long it takes for the Media to make a mountain out of a mole hill on this one as they always do.

Amazing how they never seem to report good things about this aircraft.

having flown most jets now and completed 30 flights on the A380 I would fly it every time :p

I totally agree with you, it's a beautiful aircraft! :p

But on a general level, I can never help but getting a bit worried when airlines and the authorities state something like this "is not a safety issue". It's not a safety issue unless something happens. :o

Wouldn't they repair those cracks straight away if it wasn't for purely commercial considerations? I really don't know, it sounds to me like a bit of a gamble. That those pitot readers on a certain Air France plane could be faulty when icing up had also been known months before it crashed and killed all those people and still the authorities and airline deemed it "safe" enough to let them fly until AF finally exchanges them during upcoming general maintenance checks. As I said, a gamble with the lives of passengers, purely to avoid additional costs. So much about "safety first"!

Yikes! Have to say it is a little bit worrying, though in only 4 others (assuming all have been checked) makes me think it could be isolated or at least not as serious.

Seems they have already starting with the headlines saying only QANTAS.

While it doesn't say whos A380s this problem has been found it, it could be a fault unique to early build aircraft like nancy-bird which have an older version of the wing.
