Qantas is operating an A380 from Melbourne to Tokyo as a one-off service on 21 October as QF79.

Only J and Y are being sold, so presumably some lucky Y passengers will be able to select seats in the PE cabin, and likewise with F seats for J pax. I can currently see award availability on this flight in Y, but not J.

Seats on the return NRT-MEL are not available for sale - I can only assume this will be a charter related to the Rugby World Cup.

QF35/36 MEL-SIN on this date will be operated by an A330 instead of the usual A380.

Does appear to be the case - here's the J seat map (most of F appears to be blocked for P1/CL)

I am guessing this is related to the Rugby World Cup in Japan? I think it's on around that time.

It's actually for the MotoGP as they will be transporting everyone from Tokyo (Motegi, 20 Oct) to Melbourne (Phillip Island, 27 Oct-)

Though if you think Australia will make it past the quarter finals, then this flight would help get you to get to Yokohama Stadium for the semi-final on Sun 27 Oct.

Did anyone book seats on this with a cash fare?

Qantas are now promoting this as a "Points Plane" sold exclusively as reward tickets.

The Qantas Points Plane is a flight exclusively reserved for Qantas Frequent Flyers, where every single seat, from First Class to Economy, is a Classic Flight Reward and can only be booked with Qantas Points. The flight will take off from Melbourne to Tokyo on 21 October 2019. Book one way or return with your Qantas Points, and why not bring the whole family? Booking open 7am (AEST) 16 May 2019.

Qantas has announced something interesting this morning.

A series of flights purely for FFs looking to redeem points.

First up is an A380 running Melbourne to Narita on 21.10.19.

A part of me wonders what the loads were like prior to this announcement.

People have already paid and booked for QF79 (which has been scheduled for a while now) on the 21st and I doubt they'll be kicked off (and moved to another service) - so it begs the question how many seats are really up for redemption.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

that's actually a very smart move - use ample / idle / free capacity to keep the low tier FF happy.

seems like QF finally putting some focus in Asia, like the recent
1. Direct SYD CTS seasonal flight
2. Night SYD HKG 177, plus some A380 flights to HKG

I really don't think there was ever a scheduled flight for that day as loads for the A380 are completely empty? May be incorrect though.

Definitely was as it was scheduled on 21 February as per this post on AFF

Either it's not displaying correctly or they've moved those who've booked to other services.

Is the points flight all about publicity? Why not just release a few more seats on all flights?

Probably because this makes better commercial sense to them? Not that I don't agree that would be great, but I don't think this was ever a charitable pursuit
