Am I correct in thinking some of the planes have been refurbished and some have not on this QF1 and QF2 service ? Any new things to be enjoying ? Prior to 2020 I had had quite a few first class on QF1 and 2, just wondering if much of a difference now in 2023
Lol I was dithering over a premium economy on JAL, missed their decent ticket and have ended up with a Qantas first trip instead. It will be more than likely my last first class Syd to LHR so planning on making sure I enjoy it :)
As an aside it was the only class that I noticed that had a decent sale price ,in the international sale that just ended . Ummm husband may be a tad thoughtful as I won't retain platinum this year but I have suggested that seeing I will be getting some decent SC for this trip I should not waste them and I should try to qualify again as a new WP 🤣🤣🤣

All of the planes flying this route have been refurbished.
There is lighter colored upholstery in F but apart from that you wouldn’t notice much in the F cabin.

The biggest change is the upstairs lounge area and the new J suites.
It’s a massive upgrade for J.
Very minimal overall for F.

I agree. there's really very little practical change to the F suite with the refurb (the big changes are upstairs with the J suites and the "lounge" area). Oh the lighter colours and the screen is a bit better I think, but basically the same product as before.

And of course the soft product, unfortunately, is not terribly flash.

anyway enjoy your trip to London. For sleeping and privacy they certainly are much better than J.

What are your thoughts about the new upstairs lounge?

It’s a lot more functional. A few different groups can sit at a time. The tables make it easier to have a snack or drink or watch something on your tablet or lap top.

I suppose the big question is, is it actually an enticing area to be? Previous lounge space really wasn't worth seeking out IMHO. It wasn't overly comfortable as well as dark and dingy (which can't be helped given the lack of windows).

Hey, hope you don’t mind me tagging on this thread. I’m flying J to LHR later this year. I’ve put in an upgrade request at around 80k points….do you think it’s worth it (provided I get it)? Never flown first.
You should definitely try it out at least once especially since you're flying all the way to LHR...

For me, yes. I assume you've put in for a Classic Upgrade Reward? No point trying to bid for an upgrade on this route.

And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but as a Gold you're highly unlikely to get it. Sorry!

Unless you have hundreds of thousands of points to burn, 80k points for an upgrade from Business to First is a bit steep IMO.

For 30-40k points I'd consider it but for 80k, that's another one way business class flight from Australia to Asia easily.

Yes. Classic Upgrade.
You most likely correct, I’ve had 50% success rate in my last 4 trips with upgrades to J, but first might be a stretch

Most of my flights are for business, so points go for upgrades if I can’t go J. Never use points to pay for flights as I’m usually traveling with family at that time

Arguably you have made one of the best usage of points there is out there since upgrades require less points than full classic award flights and allow you to attract the full compliment of status credits on the originally booked fare (i.e. J). The real question, then, isn't whether you made the right decision on upgrade, rather it's whether the upgrade will clear. Best of luck to you, mate! 🤞

I don't find decent reward tickets from Australia to Asia in any holiday period even if looking 6-9 months in advance. If we are able to bag a decent upgrade then why not ; last year I had to book an economy reward for 75K points but the same flight was available in F class for 85K after couple of months when there was no holiday rush.

It all depends on the timing , imo.

Thanks. I will give an update in November, requested both legs, so let’s see if I can miraculously bag one.
